They paid for it to be their registered trademark.

As much as I hate it and find it annoying, part of copyright/trademark law requires companies to take certain efforts to protect their marks. If enough people use your logo, etc. and they don't take any action, technically they can lose their own rights to it. Strange but true... doesn't make it any less frustrating though... :|
