View Full Version : GOD summer reading is SO boring

Its so annoying and I want more than anything to NOT have to read them. I've played it off pretty well without reading summer reading for the past 4 years without reading the books, except last year it didn't go so well, so I decided this year, if I want to get a wonderful GPA, I HAVE to read them, no matter how boring they may be.
Well, wonderful year for me to decide I'm actually going to read right? The year I have 4 books for english and 1 1/2 for AP American history. Wow, so brilliant. They aren't even good books either. Giving me All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot is NOT a way to encourage me to read, not in the least.
The importance of being earnest is semi-entertaining since its the kind of humor I like, but so far, its proving to be the only one I like. But I'm pretty sure I WON'T like 12 years a slave or the 3 chapters of "The Peoples history of the united states that I have to read.
GODDDDDDDDD ITS JUST SO ANNOYING!!!! I just want to burn them all. :2guns: :2guns: :2guns:
lol had to get that out. kill me now please. Since i have only about a month and a half to read it all and I haven't even finished 1.

I hated that in school, i allways went to schoolsucks.com and downloaded a report on the book, then went through it and changed some things on it.
I don't even think that site is around anymore

And the thing is we don't even HAVE to write book reports. We read the books, fill out this "analysis" sheets on each one that are like 4 pages long and ask for things like theme, etc. Then when we get to school we have to write an essay on each one, thats at least 5 paragraphs long answering the question THEY ask. And the essay and the analysis worksheets for each book each count for a test grade. So basically, you fail on those, you fail the 9-weeks. But most teachers are pretty lenient on that because the essays are dumb questions.
And the worst part is, the most boring one, which is all creatures great and small isn't even on sparknotes.

Oh last year we had to take a test the first or second day of school on the books and then write some essay about them.
I don't have summer reading this year because I'm doing dual enrollment for english (taking it at college rather than high school) :)

Blergh!! I can't stand reading unless It's something of interest to me which for most part is always on the internet. You wait until we're really old and sitting on the couch or up in bed reading a big novel, ha!

Wow, where have you been? I've had it ever since I was in 7th grade. But actually, in my high school its only if you're taking honors and gifted english classes. Regular english classes don't have it.
And for American History I'm taking AP so we have to read for that too. JOYJOYJOY!

I'm in Canada. Not sure if other provinces have it, but here in Newfoundland we don't.
Really sucks though.

I used to have to do that in high school here in California. It was required for the advanced placement english class that I was going to take senior year. come to think of it... history too

I didn't know schools actually expected kids to read in the summer for the upcoming year. I've never had to do that in high school.

I have a much stricter summer reading program than our schools have here. :). Reading is the easiest thing you can do to boost your vocabulary and knowledge and prepare for college. So after you finish your required summer reading, hit up a library or book store and get something you will enjoy and read some more. :)

I have no problem with reading, don't get me wrong. But only when the books are chosen by me, and its something I genuinely want to read. You can't force me, and I'll usually read much more.

I've never had to do it either, and I'll be taking College Prep English 3 next year. I had summer reading for a few years when I was in like middle school, but they never checked about it or tested on it so I didn't do it.

are you a teacher or something? or do you mean like as a parent?

I absolutely despise reading, unless it's something interesting, which only one book, so far, has been to me. Although, if I had chosen to read some of the books I had to read for english this year, I would have liked them.

Parent :). I prefer historical fiction. So If you are up for a great read, try Pillars of the Earth. Unusual subject, but probably the best book I ever read. River God and Aztec were great as well.

Wow Selena, poor you. This summer I need to just read one book for AP english...ahhh....
I am taking AP American History next year too =D Except I have AP Economic ontop of that. Yeahhh! Double AP history classes, don't ask, but somehow my school considered economic a history class rather than business.
Well have fun reading, which I assure that you will...hehe..

I really liked The Great Gatsby and thats one of the few books that I read for school that I really did like. Animal Farm, To Kill a Mockingbird, and The Outsiders were about the only books that I really enjoyed while at school. Sometimes they pick interesting books to read, but for the most part, they pick the most boring books anyone could possibly read. Bleh, guess I should stop complaining and probably start reading them a little more.
