View Full Version : Tagging Tutorial

I have seen some people around MSP asking how to tag glitters and layouts. Thought I'd prepare a handy tutorial.
01. Tagging Glitters in Animation Shop
01. Open PSP, create a new image with a WHITE background.
02. Find a nice pixel font, you can find cool ones on www.dafont.com
03. Click the text tool, make sure, in the very left corner in the dropdown, select "Floating".
04. Write in a site name/link. Then click "Apply".
05. Go to "Selections", then "Modify", then "Expand'.
06. A popup will come up, click "OK". Then, enter "1" in the "Number of Pixels:" thing.
07. Press CTRL+C, then go to Animation Shop, and press CTRL+V.
08. Load the glitter[s] you are tagging, and go back to the "tag" and press CTRL+C again.
09. Go to "EDIT" then "Propagate Paste".
10. Go back to your glitter, and press CTRL+A, then CTRL+E. Move the tag to where you want it to show.
11. Press the little button, in the top right corner that looks like a little movie clip. You'll see the animation play with the tag on. If you like it, go to "FILE" then "SAVE AS" or press CTRL+S to save over the original copy [not recommended if you want to keep the glitter untagged and don't have another copy made]
02. Tagging Glitters in ImageReady
There are different ways, and since I don't really use ImageReady to tag glitters much, I only know 1 way.
01. Open your glitter up.
02. Make sure the FIRST frame of the glitter is selected, and use the type tool to put in the site name/link.
03. You can view your animation and check it over a few times, then save.
03. Tagging layouts in PSP
01. Most layouts are composed of 4 parts: a background, contact table, extended network banner, and sometimes, a thumbnail. Go to "FILE", "OPEN". Then go to the file where the layout images are stored. Press "CTRL+A" then click "OPEN". This will open all images at one, and usually makes things easier.
02. Use the text tool and write the site name/link on a nice part of the image [by nice, i mean a spot where it doesn't overcrowd the image, but still makes it hard for people to steal the image].
03. Most people blend the colors so they kind of go with the look of the layout. Right-click on the text, and go to "PROPERTIES" and then mess with the colors.
04. SAVE!
04. Tagging Layouts in Photoshop
02. Use the text tool to enter a sites name/link. Mess with the colors to get it to kind of blend with the image[s].
03. Go to the bottom where it has the layers, make sure the right layer is selected, and then press the icon that has an "F" on it. That's the Blending Options. You can add stroke, etc. here.
04. SAVE!
Hope this helps, if you need anymore help with information on tagging, just shoot me a PM. I'll be glad to help. thanks for reading
By the way, everyone has a different way of tagging, so if you learned a different way, that's fine. This is just the way I tag my stuff :)

Actually a much easier way to do the glitters in animation shop
paste your tag into AS, then copy the frame until you get your desired amount of frames (as many as your glitter has). then press ctrl+a and ctrl+c
then open your glitters, press ctrl+a, ctrl+e, then ctrl+s (to save) and then you're done.

Could mods consider having a tutorials section? I see we have this tutorial and also another on creating glitters. It would be useful to have a series of tutorials on image blending, creating blinkies etc....

You're welcome Tracie ;) Glad to help.
Yeah, a "Tutorials" section would be VERY helpful. People are always posting tutorials and tips, then the posts disappear because everyones constantly posting, so many people can't find the helpful threads :)

That is something that would have to be discussed with Greg. We are limited on what we can do :) It does sound like a good idea, though.

Oh gosh, I feel like a complete tard ROFL yeah, maybe we should have someone ask Greg about this. Like maybe a "Tutorials and Help" forum or something in the Designers Corner :P

Just learned a cool new tip for tagging in imagready. You can create an action telling the program to place the tag in a certin place. You can then turn this action into a droplet and tag them all at once by dragging and dropping the files. I tagged 3000 glitters the other day in just about 2 hours, while watching a movie/stopping often cause I was distracted. This only works if you don't mind the tag being placed in the exact same location each time, which with these glitters, I didn't.

I had a method too, using actions. But it seems automating the tagging of animated gifs with imageready is much harder than tagging jpgs with photoshop, and in particular required manual effort on each image.
I'll post my way animated gif way some time this weekend when (if?) I get the chance. Can you post yours also, so that we give people options?

I dont know exactly. I've always tagged with Animation Shop and it's pretty fast. I can now tag 700 glitters in 40 minutes :P The thing they said about ImageReady is pretty automatic, you have to mess with the tag, etc. though. But it'll tag in the same spot on each glitter.

I can't edit my post but;
I recommend using PF Ronda Seven for tagging. It's the cleanest font I know.

thanks for the tutorial, i went ahead and tried to do it in imageready i must be missing something. possibly someone may know what step im not doing correctly.
1.right click on gif and edit in imageready
2.click on first frame
3.type out my tag in gif
4.position it where i want in gif
5.then when i go to save or save as it only lets me save as psd
6.only option to save it as a gif is to save optimized as
7.so in optimized screen should i have all the presets set to original?
isnt there a way to save the edited gif as a gif without saving it in optimized mode? i though optimized mode is just to save it as a different file size basically.
any info appreciated. thank you

Aw thank you so much for posting this -- you're a sweet guy!
I have a question though (for anyoneeee who can help me.) Whenever I try to tag glitters that are already made, I end up with the tag jumping all around when I transfer it from Photoshop, to Image Ready. Observe:
http://img338.imageshack.us/img338/7009/3535345hc2.gif
I tried putting text on the first layer of my glitter, but that didn't work because when the other frames came up, the tag will flash away, and comes back only on the first frame. So I tried putting a text layer imbetween (before) each frame, and it gave me that. ^^^ :(
Thanks in advance, to anyone that can help a sister out. :D

then open your glitters, press ctrl+a, ctrl+e, then ctrl+s (to save) and then you're done.
Even shorter is one frame of your tag.
Open it in animation shop then open your glitter.
Edit and select all then cope and paste your tag and it'll add it to all of your frames in the same spot :)

After waiting almost a week for my brother to tag my 2000+ glitters, I decide to make my own software that can tag animated gif. I spent lots of sleepless nights and I finally crack it.
Right now it works on 95% glitter I test on, need more work on the algorithm to make it 100%. It can tag 2500+ glitters in less than 5 minutes, no hand movement needed :)

Well, i got a glitters sale at DP with free tagging. So far every purchase is ready within 30 minutes, since I have to find the right font for the domain names.
The software is not ready for end user yet, just a rough but working version.
You can check out my sale demo site at http://glitter.avatarhut.com. I tagged all glitters there using my software :)

Steps 07-11 on the animation shop tutorial are the fastest, easiest ways to tag, in my opinion. Just practice and you'll eventually be able to tag a few hundred glitters in a few minutes :D
