my sites got allmost 20k backlinks, I havnt dont any thing dodgey.

What are some possible reasons for a massive drop like this?

any ideas, do you think I will come back up in the ranks=)

How big of a drop? I have a friend that recently dropped 50-100 positions on every keyword. Happened out of the blue for no discernable reason. It's been going on for a few weeks now and he hasn't figured it out. Some sort of G penalty... :( Hopefully it's not that for you.

First thing most webmasters do is panic and start making changes to their site when this happens......thats a mistake and could actually cause more harm then good. Google sometimes drops sites for no real reason for short periods of time and its best to give it 5 - 7 days and then if you dont see a change start analyzing your competition to see what they might have done to get ahead of you and what changes you might need to make

on a keyword im targetting, i tend to fluctuate among spots 45-50 (still working on rankings) but a couple days ago i tried to locate my site and i was nowhere to be found. i waited a day and it was back. so maybe it'll be back tomorrow ;)

They might be updating that keyword.

I have had it were I just drop out for no reason at all and appear 5 days later in the same posistion (#1)

Like minnseoelite said, give it some time.:)

Google dropped all my keywords for almost 2 months now and have now no Google traffic. In Yahoo i gained top positions for many keywords. Yahoo is my friend now and google the enemy :) But i would like to have the other way arround.

keep in mind that if there are millions of results for that keyword sequence, a ranking fluctuation of +/- 100 positions is barely a fraction of 1% difference. Don't make changes, just keep bringing in new inbound links and wait it out. If it doesnt get better, was nothing ya could have done about it to begin with. Google is as Google does.

Google has been playing with my site for a while so I've been scared to make many changes I just want to settle in. Then for the last month I've been solid except for 1 Sunday where I was no where to be found for any keyword. Weird that it was just 1 day out of the month.

Probably just the usual gyrations from Google ... I guess you checked all the datacentres, often the one you look at is the one thats out of sinc with the others.

The other thing that could have happened is that a large PR site pulled it's link to your site.

Exactly the same for me.Out of G for 2 months nearly but Yahoo went beserk when this happened.
I'm now back in G slowly regaining my serps so all is good at the moment.:)

I'm back in the rankings again today after not having been there last night when I checked, plus I'm 3 positions higher :D Just give it some time and hopefully they'll put you back, and who knows, maybe you'll be 1 or 2 positions higher.
