I have always wondered this. does a translated site count as dup content?

For example my site right now is all english. If I was to throw up a spanish version would I get nailed by any of the engines for dup content?

Alot of big sites have pages in multiple languages so I dont think it hurts you cause the spiders just read whats on the page and the text will look nothing the same even though it is saying the same thing

What exactly constitues a duplicate site?

I mean what if the layout is different, the files names are different. But in reality the content is the same. So many sites have duplicate content when it comes to generators, and editors, and even graphics which might have been purchased here.

So what really does constitue a dupe site?

Well search engine cannot read any of the images or the flash used in generators so as long as your Alt Tags and on page text are different then its different content as far as search engines are concered

I wasnt sure myself thats why I custom built everything on my site. Most msrs dont have much textual content anyways but thats what the spiders love. I think dup content consists more of textual paragraphs being copied etc. There are neat tools out there that you can run to compare sites: http://www.webconfs.com/similar-page-checker.php

just make sure u dont accidentally have the same exact page duplicated lol.. i was testing something on my home pahe and had a duplicate index... google took my homepage off the SE and i had to erase the test index and then submit a new sitemap and i was back up within 5 hours lol
thought it was funny

Hi5,

These are from the Google Webmaster Central Blog at http://googlewebmastercentral.blogspot.com/2006/12/deftly-dealing-with-duplicate-content.html

"What isn't duplicate content?
Though we do offer a handy translation utility, our algorithms won't view the same article written in English and Spanish as duplicate content. Similarly, you shouldn't worry about occasional snippets (quotes and otherwise) being flagged as duplicate content. "

I have always wondered this. does a translated site count as dup content?

Just use google translator to do all the conversions if you're that worried. and just have a frame in the page that will convert it with the google translator link/URL setup inside it.

This doesnt give me more indexed pages in google though and has no SE traffic weight behind it I don't believe? The idea would be to SEO my site for Spanish as well as English :)
