Ok I want to start up my own social networking site =)
Dont worry it will be in a totally different niche to myeeos/myspace/bebo ect ect...
Wont be related at all =)
Bacially all I know is HTML and some basics of PHP I am not the best web designer out thier I just know a lot about promotions =)
What I want to know is are their any good social networking scripts out their? something thats ok and easy to modify, I think I could get 10k members with the promotion style I use.
Does any oen want to reccomend some good scripts, give me advice on hosting?
and all other dramas with setting up this style of site =)
thanks =)

Most of the turnkey scripts out there are for sites like Myspace ect. I have not heard of any body recommending anything so I am guessing you would be best off hiring a programmer for a custom job.

I've seen quite a few on: http://hotscripts.com
It just depends on what kind of budget you have in mind :]

Stay away from alstrasoft efriends script. The script and support - It is just CRAP!!!!
Heard good things about phpfox though. They have decent support and plugins. Plus they seem to update quite often.

If you want something stable and easy to work with, phpizabi gets my vote. Although I'm not thrilled with any current offerings, of all that I tested phpizabi was the least cumbersome.

whats easy to work with out of all these listed?
what kind of hosting should I need for say 10k members, I think I could build a 10k member base in 12 months, but the niche I am targeting my ba hard to target =(

I used phpizabi and it got hacked by Turkish Hackers. I went to their forum and they were actually laughing at me, lol.
I would personally go with PhpFox. There's a bunch of awesome mods for it as well.

phpFox gets my vote. I use them for my site that I'm going to be releasing soon [Nope, it's not like Myspace or anything].

Any major websites powered by phpfox? I mean, a site with at least xx,xxx members?

i have a few phpfox sites.....the largest user base i have is a little over 4,000 users on one site. each of my sites are "niche" specific so each have a targeted audience.
my others are still in development or just recently launched.
i have not used any of the latest phpfox versions (1.5+) in that i have many customized mods on my version (v1.1) and if i upgrade, i will lose most of the modifications. plus i really don't have too many complaints about v1.1 that would make me absolutely have to upgrade at the time being.
i have not used any of the other scripts mentioned, so i can't really comment on how they compare to phpfox.:)

after reviewing phpizabi, i'm going to have to change my vote. it looks really good and if i'm not mistaken... free?

Phpizabi is free, but just remember, you get what you pay for. Like Sergio said, he was hacked while using phpizabi. I use phpFox and it works great, it's just I discovered a huge flaw in the product and reported it to the development team, I believe they fixed it. Anyway, phpFox is nice, if you can afford it.

PhpZazi is crappy, it reminds me of the work done by Boonex.
DO NOT use Boonex. They will plague you with a bunch of ads upon visiting their site for one thing. One time, I didn't have my popup blocker on and a virus was installed on my computer. The script was also very difficult to customize as they didn't ALLOW one to do much to it.
Usually, it's like with some of these free programs, they look good on the exterior and it's though it's too good to be true. Then you find out that they were just a huge waste of time.
As far as vastal, I've never tried it, but users were complaining about how there's no support.
I use Php Fox and I will say that it's the best out there. It's very easy to customize too. With the template that I created, one may not be able to tell that Php Fox is what I'm using. And if you can't get support from the owners, you get support from other members on their forum in a flash. They get a lot of bad rap for not releasing things when they say they will, and a few bugs here and there (what scripts don't have them) but I haven't found any better, and the bug problems usually get resolved.

Yeah, Phpfox is deffinitly the way to go, the support team responds faster than any other i've seen out there. Once you pay, you get an automatic download link and you get access to your own personal spot where there are mods, themes, etc. for free. It's the best.

Yeah! And some of the free mods are freaking unbelievable! Some would pay hundreds for some of the free mods that they offer!

Yeah! I agree, I just haven't found the time to install the mods. I downloaded them though. :) There are mods like Music, Video, etc. It's cool.

i just wish their were more good "free" phpfox mods.....seems everyone wants to charge for everything over there. wish it was kind of like vbulletin where the vast majority of mods/add ons are free. i have spent well over $700 just in mods for phpfox:whistling:
