just a heads up....this isn't a myspace resource site or even related to myspace, but was wondering if anyone had some tips to help me out.....

i have an ecommerce site that ranks very well in google for its niche. it has numerous top 10 links for heavily searched keywords for its niche and even a few top 5 rankings. however, in yahoo, i have not been able to crack the 1st page in awhile and it is slowly sinking on page two.

what are things that might help me move up on yahoo without worrying about sacrificing my google rankings? i recently purchased the link directory submission service that was mentioned on another thread here in the forums. we will also be purchasing some pr5 and pr6 links within the next week anchored with a few of our top keywords.

i did notice that google seemed to pull a different description for our site when listed in the google search than did yahoo search results. it appeared that yahoo pulled the description from the alexa description we had.....so i was able to get our alexa description changed to match the one that shows on google. this was about a week ago and it looks like yahoo has not re-indexed our site in their search since i have made that change. not sure if this what will make the difference or not in yahoo once it gets re-indexed?

any thoughts or ideas to help out my site on yahoo? basically what does yahoo really look for compared to google? thanks!

Yahoo still places alot of value on links coming from related directories and likes a higher keyword density than Google does.

Yeah if you want to try to rank better on Y while still staying in the good graces of Google, concentrate on inbound links. Increased KW density helps with Y (and MSN as well), but if you push it, Google will scuttle your site right quick.

Yahoo puts a lot of empahsis on domain age and pagerank. It took me almost a year for one of my sites to get steady yahoo traffic and even then it is a tiny fraction compared to google traffic.

thanks for the quick responses everyone....

the domain is almost 4 years old (will be in about 1 month) and currently has a PR4. according to iwebtool, it will be a PR5 after the next update...not sure how accurate those are anyway.

so for the most part it sounds like i am on the right track trying to gain one way directory links and increasing my PR with the one way high PR links i am going after.

i do know that google is the best search engine to be ranked high in, but i would definitely like to move up in yahoo so i can get my fair share of exposure from them from the people that use yahoo :)

also, i would think these new links i am getting would only help strengthen my google position and not harm it?

PR 4 probably isn;t high enough. To rank for the competitive terms you will need 5 or 6.

yeah, i figured PR4 is what might be hurting us the most in the rankings.....however, in my niche, the "big boy" sites only have PR's of 5 and 4 (we are ranked ahead of both of them for the biggest term in our niche on google). those are full blown corporations that own those sites. where as mine is a two man show......i think if i can get to atleast a PR5, we can stay ahead of them in the search engines (hopefully yahoo as well as google) and be able to generate more sales with less CPC advertising :)

It also took me about a year to finally start getting traffic from Yahoo that's actually worth it.

Pay the $9,000 to get your site listed in Yahoo Directory.

Link to yahoo.com on your site like so:

Yahoo

It seems to kinda work? Maybe I just lucked out though and it was coincendence.

Pay the $9,000 to get your site listed in Yahoo Directory.

It's $299. With $9000, you can get 30 sites listed.

I was joking. But considering, you have to pay annually, even 1 site will cost you that much eventually.

There is a lot of debate regarding the directory because it isn't cheap. I don't think it is worth it.

yeah, we are not listed in the yahoo directory....i wouldn't mind paying the $299 if it were a one time fee....

on a side note, i noticed today that our site is now listed at #7 in yahoo for our major term. yesterday it was as low as #17 and recently as high as #13 in the past few months.

i have not started the high PR one way links yet. only changed my alexa description (which still is not showing in yahoo) and started the link directory submission service last week. hopefully it continues to move up as more of this is implemented for my site :)

a week has gone by since my last post about this and for our most targeted/important term, we have now slipped to #19 in yahoo. i think i read somewhere that yahoo was changing things up and i am not sure if this has something to do with that or not?

still holding steady in google though:)
