View Full Version : What does everyone think of mydeathspace?

For anyone who hasn't heard of it, mydeathspace is a site that puts up photographs of people who have died, together with a brief summary of what happened to them (as reported in the media) and links their photograph to their myspace profile.
What really rubs salt in the wounds are the subsequent discussions on the site's forum having a laugh about the deaths and berating any bereaved relatives who are unfortunate enough to learn of the existence of their loved one's appearance on the site and who then post in their anguish and anger.
I learned of the existence of the site on DigitalPoint forums when someone made a post about how disgusted they were. I had to agree.
My gut wrenched everytime I clicked on one of those photographs and landed on a Myspace profile knowing the person was dead.
Nauseating enough but nothing compared to reading their forums

I always assumed it was a place to remember friends who had passed. It's pretty sick from the sound of it.

Disgusting.......I'm not going near there.
I'm pretty tolerant about most things but that is just going way to far :( .

A place to remember friends is something I could see a need for and even view it as commendable in a way. When I visited the site a few weeks ago I read through the forum.
Here's an example of the type of thing going on:
As a mother of a murdered daughter and grandson I can tell you that this place sickens me! You should all be ashamed of yourselves! I saw a link to this place on another website and I'm completely shocked at some of the stuff I read! Your words cut like a knife!
I am a member of Parents of Murdered Children and I can assure you I will actively work at making this place disappear before any other parent of a murdered/deceased child stumbles on it!
Would you want someone to laugh at your sister's/brother's murder or death? Shame on all of you!

Lisa

Why don't you try and get this site off the internet... nambla.org........try and make a real difference!!!
STFU!!!!
Are you serious that this is the 1st comment you are making on this board? Do us all a favor and leave if you don't like what goes on here, good, bad, or otherwise. Some of us on the board DO have feelings, and are sorry for every death that occurs. But if your child is murdered, how about focusing your hate and frustration on the person(s) that committed the murder, and not on the general public.

It's sites like that which make me sit back and seriously contemplate putting a few servers to work for a while.....

Although the community part of the site is pretty damn ugly (and I even like dark humor), I still appreciate the site itself. Yes it is dark and a bit creepy but just spending 10 minutes reading peoples listings helps remind you how short and fragile life really is. It's easy to get caught up in the business of life to stop and apprecate it and those around you but reading how many young, many times good people, die in just sad and wasteful ways I get reminded that I need to spend more quality time.
As for the asses on there, kharma will meet them eventually, but anyone can get something positive out of it if they read the site itself.

Way to find the positive Scilynt ;)
On that note. I still miss Steve Irwin. I have probably watched over 20 hours of tribute video in the past few days and it just makes me sick how someone so wonderful and so inspiring can be taken from us. Losing Steve Irwin was like losing a part of the soul of humanity.

I'm the one who lives in Australia LOL.....MrGeek bailed and went to New Zealand where I originate from...It was a cultural exchange LOL
Yes Peter perfect's state funeral was today, a very moving affair, it stopped the nation.
Steve's service is on Wednesday, his family opted out of a state funeral which is a bit sad but it's their decision......can't disagree with that....
There were three motor racing events on here in Aussie this weekend, all honoured Brocky and at the Mount at Bathurst their was a huge turn up of people to mourn his passing.
Bathurst for those who don't know is the premier racing event here in Australia and Peter Brock won it 9 times.
Hence his titles "King of the Mountain" and "Peter Perfect".

Brocky was a Hero to Australia and Motor Racing fans.
Steve Irwin was a Hero to the world.

thing is peter brock was a australia only idol to racing fans,
people who were into holdens would have known him, he was probly not known around the world at all, Maby by only a select group of people.
His death still does have a bit of coverage around the local networks even today the news started in dedication to him.
Very sad but :(

I think this in general take it to far ..but then again...can we question what makes and rake in revenue. I have sites I am not proud of ..but do not blink twice when they gather traffic. I think a mix and match is what makes us the world wide web in general a GOOD THING.
A good ideas will stay for time ..and this will run it course I am sure!!

I don't think people were talking as much about the site as a money maker as much as the content/idea/users there. To be honest, I probably wouldn't mind owning it for the traffic aspect but the way the content is managed and the users are allowed free reign is kind of upsetting.

The owners of mydeathspace.com make no money off of it for one. and for 2 there is nothing wrong with it. some people have a morbis sense of humor and some dont. if a family member has a problem with their loved one being on there then it will be taken off. if you dont like the site stay away from it its as simple as that. there is nothing wrong with the site at all!!

Wow I can't even explain how emotional that site is. I don't know how they can keep doing it without breaking down.... the pictures of each person really hits you. I was looking at a girl who died from taking X on new years for the first time and her parents must keep her profile open for friends... they post things to her everyday and talk to her like she's still there.....
It's sad stuff but definately not bad.

Wow, that site is really depressing to go through. Way too many young people being taken by drugs, suicide, and car accidents. When you match individual events with the pictures it becomes way too personal for me to read.

I can see where your own personal view on the site would swade?sp? you that way but personally if I ended up on the site I wouldn't care, it would actually be nice especially if I died from something that sends a message to people like hey don't do this. It says these are real people, with real faces and real lives.....
the thing that makes me cry is where they just fade from existence. They were alive one day like any normal person their age and the next day you don't realize the weight of everything your entire life.... you read on their pages people treating them like sh*t... how do you think those people feel now that their dead? What would you do to go to school or work tomorrow and someone just isn't there?
Death it's a bad thing.... but it shouldn't be feared.
