For a site just starting out, is it safe to say that going shared isn't so bad? I found a nice shared package that offers 2000Gb of BW.

I'm so confused on what I want to do, but I know I can't afford dedicated yet. LMAO

I am on a shared host http://www.bluehost.com/ they offer 3000 GB of BW and my sites don't exceed limits, I am currently running 4 sites on that bluehost account.

The only probably I have is I had to turn off my stats because it was bogging the server down and giving CPU exceeded errors. When I talked to customer service they said my stat files where over a Gig for one day. But turning off awstats and weblizer cured it.
It really just depends on what kind of scripts your running.

As long as you have efficient scripts you should be ok for quite some time.

I hope the script I'm using is sufficient, LOL....It's not your normal everyday MS resource script, it's a gallery script...4image..

Sometimes, I think I'm getting in to deep but I really want to run this site.

Even if it isn't you wont notice til you get a good amount of traffic.
You just want scripts that get right to the point, and don't have a bunch of different unneeded functions. Small and simple.

For example a moderate size forum or phpnuke on a shared host is bad news....
A simple photo script should run good!

If it's a small script it will be alright even if you have large bursts of traffic, you'd be surprised at what a shared host can handle if everything is as it should be.

It's a fairly simple script. It mostly runs on html with some PHP call functions. Not alot of code.

I think I will go ahead and setup my hosting. I've been itching to get everything uploaded and start designing it...lol

Go ahead I think you'll be alright, mine takes alot of hits, before I shut my stats off in april because of the problems I was having it took 5-6 million hits that month.

Very few sites actually need dedicated servers.

from my experience, connections are more important than bandwidth. i currently have 2Tb of bandwidth and have never even come close to using it (the most i've ever used was about 1Tb). however, i've had to upgrade servers or get additional servers several times because i run out of connections and the site times out.

Ok, total dumb question that I should know the answer of so be prepared, LOL....

Connections? I'm a bit confused, I never had to deal with connections before when looking for a host....Is that something in fine print or something from the hosting company?

you wont really have to worry about connections on a shared host, and if your going with media temple you will be fine, as i said before my MSLS site on media temples grid server actually ran faster than most peoples on a VPS server. Up till recently I had 2 MSLS scripts running on it getting a combined 3500 visitors a day and was completely safe and MSLS is a pretty advanced script.

For starting out I would just use Shared
