I need some tips on how to rank high in google etc.
I know that everyone has their own ways of doing this and don't want to publicly share. But even small little things will help.
I have NO IDEA about any of this stuff, so any help would be appreciated.

Google has a ton of information on this subject. There are also tons of subjects on this right here on the board. Also read about SEO.

A little effort will go a long way.

Good Luck!

Well I think we both know that there are those things that we all have control over, but the one thing none of have control over is time.

These are in no particular order, but I hope it helps somewhat.

1. descriptive urls. for example, if the page contains contact tables, make the url http://yoursite.com/contact-tables/ instead of [url]http://yoursite.com/ct/. I use a lot of htaccess url rewriting to make http://yoursite.com/?cat=contact-table&page=1 into http://yoursite.com/contact-table-1.htm

2. title your pages uniquely. don't make all the pages have a title of yoursite.com. if your page has layouts, make it yoursite.com myspace layouts.

3. proper use of meta tags. though meta tags don't help much in SEO any more, they are still good for some (a few) spiders and they're good for accessibility. Don't use the same meta tags throughout the site. Pick keywords what reflect what's on each page and descriptions that describe the page.

4. content. use keywords in your content to describe what you're talking about. instead of a page full of graphics and no description, put your graphic and under it put what the graphic is. for example, if it's a happy birthday glitter graphic, put the image and put (in text) happy birthday glitter graphic. Every page absolutely needs text that talks about what your page offers.

having the code on a page with 50 happy birthday glitter graphics and nothing else will probably make you rank higher for style type="text/css" than for "happy birthday glitter graphic" since style type="text/css" appears 50 times on that page and "happy birthday glitter graphic" appears nowhere. this is why i usually don't even put the code on the same page as the graphic. instead i make "happy birthday glitter graphic" a link to the code page which only has that one graphic on it.

5. alt tags. use alt tags on your images. this helps with accessibility no matter what, but helps with pr if the alt tag is placed on a linked image. so, <a href="url"><img src="url" alt="happy birthday glitter graphic" title="descriptive title"></a> is much much better than <a href="url"><img src="url"></a>

6. semantic structure. use h1, h2, h3,lists,code, etc. to give your document structure. the most common mistakes i see on a lot of myspace resource sites is people using css on a span to make a header or people using h1, h2, h3, etc. incorrectly. there should only be one h1 on your page (which is a brief title of what the page is about) then h2's, h3's etc. follow. proper semantic structure also helps with accessibility.

7. anchors on links. if a page is about layouts, make the anchor say layouts and not something else. if you use images, make your alt tags say layouts so spiders and screen readers can still know what that link points to.

i'm sure there are much more, but this is just off the top of my head. alot of these have as much to do with accessibility as they do with search engines :gun_bandana:

Might want to check out SEOBook if you have the cash its probably the most in depth and accurate one out there and has marketing help as well. For the beginner I would also recommend using the free version of WebCEO.

This is also a site I visit alot http://www.seochat.com lots of good info and free tools on there

Stay away from SEO book.

His books covers only a little SEO but a lot of it is devoted to PPC which isn't relevant to SEO. It is also overpriced. Worth no more than 20 bucks.

if you are new to SEO just read around. Check out some of the stuff on webmasterworld. Lots of good info there. Do some research.

Here is the deal. Google ignores most onsite factors and ages sites and links to an extreme degree. it is much harder to rank now for high traffic, competitive keywords than 3 years ago due to these aging factors. Google also has a habit of shuffling rankings periodically and apply ranking penalties to sites without any provocation. We need google but google certainly doesn't need us. All google needs is for people to keep buying those little adwords ads.

yes i already said it covers marketing. how updated was your version of SEO book cause he has added some more SEO related stuff last i checked. And my whole point was that it is more updated than all that other free junk out there that still try and tell you that meta keyword tags are still highly important :P

Mods, this thread should go into the SEO section.

Here's a free SEO book by Dan Thies. He just published a new version a week ago. It is a great book for beginners. If you sign up with his mailing list, he has promised free access to his link building videos soon.

Excellent tips. Those are things a webmaster can control, as they are onsite factors.

It's no secret that incoming links are extremely important for ranking high in Google. Work on acquiring more incoming links to your site. Yes, this takes time and is certainly not easy for competitive keywords. The anchor text of the incoming links is also very important and should include keywords that you want to rank for.

These are in no particular order, but I hope it helps somewhat.

1. descriptive urls. for example, if the page contains contact tables, make the url http://yoursite.com/contact-tables/ instead of [url]http://yoursite.com/ct/. I use a lot of htaccess url rewriting to make http://yoursite.com/?cat=contact-table&page=1 into http://yoursite.com/contact-table-1.htm

building quality conent for your site even a myspace resource site, you still need to have text for every layout graphic, descriptive examples of what it is.

Backlinks are important when ranking in good, also you need to on the points myspace designs listed.

just keep getting links form similar sites and buld content and you will see increases in keywords.

It's no secret that incoming links are extremely important for ranking high in Google. Work on acquiring more incoming links to your site. Yes, this takes time and is certainly not easy for competitive keywords.
And there are things you can do to cut how much time it takes to get incoming links as well. Onlywire (http://www.onlywire.com/) is good. And if you want to spend money you can buy more powerful tools to submit to bookmarking sites. You should be prepared to spend money if you're sort of impatient. You can outsource the job of directory, article submissions etc. to other people like Connections. If you go to Digital Point, there are a lot of good people there (don't bother reading the non-services threads, mostly just a waste of time and people plugging garbage e-books in their signatures).

If you're serious, you'll want to spend the hefty price to submit your site to Yahoo directory, and you'll want to submit your site to DMOZ and pray a corrupt editor contacts you so you can get your site listed sometime this century. I have connections there if you PM me.
