Bandwidth that doesn't have to travel a long path? Like hosted in the US, but all the bandwidth and visitors are coming from Antarctica or something like that.

So what if my site has a wide variety of users? Just wanted to know what I was getting into before I signed up.
I want to make sure that I get a decent BW amount as I can't afford a dedicated right now..

Short path bandwidth I think provides a faster connection to your sites server kinda like premium bandwidth...But that is just a guess I have never really looked at it closely. I was running MSLS on their grid server and it was actually pretty fast I did not really have the problems everyone else had with slow load times

Hah! I was way off then. I ended up looking it up anyway:
To answer your question specifically, “Shortpath” bandwidth refers to (mt) Media Temple’s peering relationship with many of the premiere ISPs throughout the Internet. Our network is currently directly peered with AT&T/Yahoo DSL, Adelphia, Earthlink, Cox Communications, and Japan Telecom.
This means that if someone who uses e.g. Adelphia for their Internet connection, wants to look at your site, then that traffic only travels through our network and Adelphia’s. It never goes outside to the Internet. As a result, transfers will be faster, and we can also monitor it better.

The only thing that looks impressive is their bandwidth. ;] But a 60 gig hard drive for $150/month is not impressive at all.

Every host has its perks and downsides it just depends what you are looking for....me i have almost 3000 image files and am still under 1 gig in size so a 60 gig hard drive would last me for years. The only down side I see would be if you wanted to host audio or video files on your sites.

Obviously people are going to want the better deal, yes? I've been in the web hosting industry since 2002.

There are so many MANY better deals, advertised there, then that company.

Yea I know you can find cheaper prices and better deals but I have learned you get what you pay for and most of those bargain hosts don't even use server grade components thats how they charge less is by using desktop level parts in their servers.
But I have my opinion and you have yours so if you have a host you would recommend feel free to post it and in the end let each person choose what is important to them for me they are
1. Quality server grade hardware
2. Support
3. Bandwidth
4. Storage

its pretty much a well known fact, do you actually think that a company that charges $7 for 300gb of storage and 3000mb of bandwidth is using the same server grade components as a company that charges $20 a month for 100gb of storage and 1000mb of bandwidth....do the math they have to cut corners somewhere

LMFAO!
You're naive dude. It means that they're overselling! There is no way you can create a 300gb account in the first place. If you think about 99% of the customers will never use more then 5-10% of their resources. So these companies oversell their resouces. All shared hosting providers do it ;) Or MOST. Doesn't necessarily mean their hardware is crap. A datacenter isn't going to waste their money with crap hardware?

Ok so I am naive I can live with that, but what ever I have had my share of battles for the week and just wanted to state my opinion on this so sorry I am just going to have to deprive you on this one :)

I e-mailed MediaTemple a while ago before we launched our site. You're not allowed to use their hosting to hotlink apparantly... aka storing images (or in our case swfs) that are used on MySpace profiles or other sites.

thats almost as bad as that firm telling users to ban googlebot, you pay for it you should get it it shouldn't matter where it goes as long as you pay and it's not illegal :s

I considered MT a couple of years back when I first started running sites. Honestly they treated me like **** - very much like a "small fish" that wasn't worth the effort. Granted I wanted their basic plan at the time, but they still could have made an effort.

I have been using them for months with no problem. All hosting has that little TOS it means that you can't just use your account just for hosting images most shared hosts state that at least 90% of your images on the server must be linked to an html/php file on your website

Not all hosting has that TOS. Many let you do what you will with the hardware you're paying hundreds a month for.
Saying that, it's fair enough if a host doesn't want to run that kind of service, just annoys me to find a host that looks really promising, only to find some small print buried in the TOS which means I can't use 'em.

You pay hundreds a month for shared hosting ROFL
might wanna re-read my post as it stated it was concerning shared hosts (not dedicated or even VPS)
