View Full Version : Mass Directory Links - Good or Bad?

For the seo/pr savvy here...
I'm thinking about paying for a service that submits my site to a bunch of directories. I recently read somewhere that having tons of backlinks with the same anchor text or description I guess, could actually begin to drop you in serps.
Now I'm under the impression that it helps raise pr, what I'd like some clarification on is how it effects you when it comes to the search engines. Would anyone be able to comment on this with authority?
Thank you.

I use mass directory submission services from eXe on digital point forums. They let you use up to 5 different anchor texts. Make sure who ever you go with that they let you use at least 3 different anchor texts for the submissions

I have currently been researching this as well but I find myself so unsure about who is actually providing the best service at the best price. With so many to choose from, what in your opinion is the most important factor when choosing who to work with?

they are bad. If you want lots of links post in myspace profiles. Direcorties have zero PR and no traffic or benefit.

So all of those PR3 - PR7 directories I submit to have no PR lol.....If you submit your site to SE friendly directories you will get PR even if your link ends up on an inner directory page with a PR1 you still get PR. And if you only rely on myspace profiles for PR what will you do if Myspace adds a no follow tag to all outgoing links, where will your PR be then?
Yahoo still heavily weighs links from directories so if you are targeting Yahoo then you want alot of links from SE friendly directories especially the larger ones. Google on the other hand likes to see links from all kinds of sources websites, directories, myspace profiles, blogs, articles with G its just a matter of finding the right balance between them.
I don't have an old enough site to compete for the big keywords but I have found that getting 60% of my links from myspace profiles, 20% from directories, and 20% from related sites tends to work well with Google. While a 60/30/10% ratio tends to work well with Yahoo.

I've been happy so far with the service mentioned above by MKinfo. They do daily submissions and you can alternate the anchor text. They give you a spreadsheet report as well so you can review.

I'm talking about the PR of actual page which contains your link. Often, you get very little if any PR passed because that page has 5-30 outbound links and maybe 1-3 PR if your lucky. But usually the toolbar PR is 0.
Now I have a system of adding myspace profiles which have PR to my friend list and I can put my link in the profiles to mt website without losing the PR even with the no follow tags. A solid link on a PR 4 profile is worth more than 10 cruddy directory links.
Also google is aware that people exploiting directories to try to gain rankings so they put less emphasis on them. For one, the directory isn't relevant to your site. Just look a digitalpoint market place to see how oversaturated the directory market has become.

Links are links, don't worry about PR or relevant links.
Did I say that out loud? ;)

I agree that directory links do not pull the weight they once did but they do still help. When my site was first launched it did not rank anywhere even after being indexed for two weeks, I then paid for 500 directory submissions and within a week after those links being added to those directories my site ranked in the top 20 for 3 of my targeted keywords on Google, MSN, and Yahoo and those where the only links my site had other than 2 link exchanges from 2 other new myspace sites.

As long as you do not use the same anchor text (as said before) they won't do you any harm.
I use them on a few sites and rank top in the 3 main SE's for a lot of competetive keywords/phrases.
You do need to get links from other places too.

Yea thats what I tried to state in my first post is that directory links will help but should only be a small % of your sites total incoming links

But it is a lot of work though. Sure you can outsource it but it costs money and you have to make sure that your employee isn't ripping you off. There don't exist good software programs for directories unlike myspace where you can automate the process with scripts.
Another problem is approval. I tried submitting my completely whitehat site to a a bunch of directories (about 24) and a year and half later google only shows I have one link. The majority of directories either rejected it or the link vanished or didn't pass PR.

If you are prepared to pay then the 2 mentioned here are highly recommended.I have used exe in the past and it was a great service and the one I use now is second to none.I get on average 200 directory submissions every month with a 90% acceptance rate with the one I'm using probably because they are new directories which are chosen carefully.Sure some of them will fail but on the other hand some will be a great success.
IMO $20/month is small change for that type of service.
But as Ad disengaged said you have to be careful who you use as there are quite a few scammers around.

you just have to look around, be sure to find a service that lest your vary your anchor text, uses only SE friendly directories, updates their list regularly to weed out dead directories and ones that switch to a non SE friendly listing format. They are out there you just have to look for them.

Directories can definetly help get your site indexed by the major search engines, but they won't get you to the top of the serps. You have to have a well planned link campaign to pull off a top five listing for a competitive term these days.
