Hi,
has anyone here tried to start an image hosting website?
Do you have any piece of advice on hosting and ads placement?
:)

my boyfriend has an image hosting website (http://www.letsuploadit.net/)

he spent alot of time and effort trying to get all the coding perfect. he uses a script for it but i cant remember what its called.

having an image hosting site is good and all that but you should always make sure youve got enough bandwith and space for it, especially if youve got lots of people direct linking images. remember direct linking is a quick way to eat up bandwith.

if youre going to put ads all over the place, make sure they blend in and dont look out of place, but dont blend them in so much that youre making people falsely click them - I've seen a few MSRS do that.

I have this same script on one of my hosting site http://pichousing.com its called

Uploader v6 by CeleronDude if you throw a search into google you will find it but the creator is not selling it anymore the newer versions you can get a older version for free from his site but its not as good as v6. so that sucks

My Opinion is that image hosting site can use up a lot of bandwidth and space very fast. Also, use up a lot of your server resources. So, Pls plan carefully before doing a image hosting bussiness.

I wouldn't touch the image hosting market with a verrry long stick.

Des and I created an image hosting site and it did quite well, but we also developed screenshot software that integrated with it and I think that had a lot to do with its success.

We also did not allow direct linking to the images uploaded though, only the thumbnails - which is really the only way to maintain profitability on a free site unless you're willing to stick it out for the long haul.

We just sold it recently, but the URL is prntscrn.net (they've packed the site full of ads now, but it used to only have two at the top of each page).

Yeah, like Chris said, I wouldnt touch the image hosting market with a long stick. It's good if you have good money and alot of experience like Greg and Des.

Oversatruated

I don't know that I would agree that it's oversaturated, at least not with high quality image hosting services. But at the same time as others have said, I would touch this one because to play in this game you have to play major league with some already well established big boys. Not to mention, omg copyright issues can become overwhelming, even more so for those who also allow music and video hosting. ugh!

Hey Greg-J that was a great site / image hosting you made but the ads really have messed it up i IMO but great job other than that...

jesus... you werent kidding.

i couldnt even navigate through the site without a bouncing "Windows Error" ad flashing in my face.

tooo many big boys in this market, but if you have a niche idea I thought it could work.

I wonder how sites like megaupload and rapidshare dont get taken down beucase every one kows these are the loading point for illigal stuff on the net.
