You want to hear about 1AND1? Sure...

I had a few dedicated servers with them for about 3 months (actually 7, but I'll get to that). One of them didn't function properly from the beginning, one of them had firewall issues CONSTANTLY and one of them actually worked as advertised. After over two months of the worlds most unresponsive and incompetent tech support, I cancelled my servers. It took 4 months and the only way I was able to get their attention was to completely cancel the credit card they were on. Not just any credit card, my business credit card. It took me the better part of two days to get everyone else that was pulling from that card sorted properly as well.

So this was back in March. March 23rd was the day I got a call from an actual supervisor apologizing profusely about the mistake and assuring me it would never happen again.

Well yesterday I get a call from a collection agency telling me that I owe them almost $300 for an account past due with 1AND1. You know all know I feel about acting on principal I'm sure, so when I heard this I hit the roof. I think it's important to remember that this guy calling me isn't to blame, but it's his fault for taking the account on the word of 1AND1, so I let him have an earful. Then he switched ears and I let that one have it too.

I the promptly hung up and rang 1AND1 where I was again, apologized to, and then told it would be taken care of in a few days...

So 1AND1? Stay away. Stay far far away.

I thought this topic deserved a thread of it's own.

Personally, I detest 1&1. Loathe. Hate.

I've dealt with numerous hosts over the years and this particular one is in a category of crappiness all of it's own, imo.

Here's a thread on Namepros all about them. I would suggest anyone considering using 1&1 read through it very carefully.
1&1 suck (http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/159651-1and1-com-hater-aaaaccckk.html)

That's ridiculous. Did you still have to pay the $300 or did you sort it out with them?

I'll definitely note that they're not a wise choice when looking for servers, thanks :)

Thanks for telling us about this.
I hate companies that keep delaying talking to you...its like TALK TO ME NOW DUMBOS! I mean if they would simply take care of your problem promptly they'd have less problem taking care of your request to being with.

Yeah, I agree that 1&1 is horrible. I didn't purchase any hosting from them, but got a couple domains off a special deal from them a long time ago, and dealing with them was a major pain. Stay far far away.

1and1 sucks, any company that offers shared hosting and dedicated servers is garbage in my opinion. Go with a provider like Servermatrix, layaredtech, ev1, etc...

Did I mention not to go near 1&1?

They suck and have caused many webmasters no end of trouble.

Here's another thread on DP about them 1&1 suck (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=60380)

and here's bankraid.com, a site mostly concerned with one and one (http://bankraid.com/archive/0610/more_scandals.htm) horror stories

people think 1and1 is good because 1and1 does a good job of using hype in its ads to get people excited about them and their great "deals"....then once they have your credit card and can bill you for basically whatever they want the support goes basically non exsistant and their servers are crap so your basically stuck with a crappy server and nobody at customer support answering your requests to get it fixed

The same thing happened to me, but for shared hosting, which they were offering for free for the first 3 years. I stopped using it after 3 months, because I just didnt like it for some reason. This was back in 2003 or 2004.

Last November I check my credit report while buying a house, and they have $110 in collection, since I didnt call and actually cancel my service.

BASTARDS.

Don't touch them. For anything.

If you are buying domains use one of the big domain sellers - Godaddy.com, Namecheap.com are two that immediately spring to mind as good for domains.

DO NOT host your website with the same company from which you buy your domains - if anything goes wrong hosting-wise, all you need do is change the nameservers to a new host. If you have domains and hosting with the same company, you're stuffed. ;)

Um, dunno really - everyone seems to have their favourites see this thread (http://www.myspacepros.com/forum/showthread.php?t=3873).

I guess it really depends on what you intend doing with the hosting - what the site is and what volume of traffic you expect.

Well a modicum of good news. 1and1 put my sites back up for the meantime (but will quickly take it down if my resources are too much). I've bought a server at layeredtech and will start migrating as soon as that is built. For now, I've replaced both sites with a custom 404 until my move happens.

Word to the wise, if you are getting a bunch of traffic on a shared host, move before they whack you. I should have been much smarter. I was getting around 17K UV and 150k PV a day and should have moved weeks ago when traffic took off. :(

Wish me luck.

Chris...

Well to even out this argument... if there wasn't such bad reviews of 1&1 I would love them. I'm on a shared using ~ 1TB bandwidth every month for about a year. The only reason I am going to soon switch from them is I don't want to be screwed over by them, which seems to be happening to a lot of people.

But from my experience, 1&1 has been the best shared hosting company I have ever been with. However, I haven't canceled an account with them yet... so we will see what happens.

P.S. Greg, you said you had to close your business credit card. Why not switch 1&1 to a card you hardly use and then cancel that card?
