View Full Version : Position 1 and a keyword domain name

I was wondering, I was ranked number 1 for *something* myspace layouts on Google, I do not have these keywords in my domain name, or as any page name within my site.

Someone with the exact domain name for this keyword has been moving up the ranks over the past week or so and is now ranked number 1 and I am down to second.

Is there anything I can do to regain first position. Would it help if I added a page to my site with these layouts that was named exactly as the keywords are? Or is it virtually an impossible task against someone with the keyword domain? I imagine it is, but that's coming from someone who knows very little about SEO.

Thanks

Edit: Seperate question, for some other keywords I noticed some sites have 2 listings, the first one being domain.com the second one being a page within the site, like domain.com/layouts.php ad this is indented, why is that, and how can this be achieved, having first and second spot must rake in clicks...

its very easy to regain your position with very little effort.

So are you saying the domain isn't the be all and end all or doesn't play as big a role as I think?

keywords in the domain name do help but do not make it impossible to defeat....just do a search for "myspace layouts and you will see that myspacelayouts.com, myspace-layouts.com and such appear nowhere

Thanks, that's right, I didn't think of it that way.

Put the keywords in your title and get some backlinks with those keywords and im sure you'll boot them in the *** in no time.

Um, is the site you're talking about a purple-y colour?

From position one to position two is not a big deal.

agreed even loosing one position can mean loosing thousands of visitors a day...i am sure the difference in traffic for something like myspace layouts between position 1 and position 2 is at least 5k visitors a day

I am ranked number one for *something* myspace layouts and other sites with domains with *something* in them, as well as one that is *something* layouts.com is at number 3.

I just increase my rankings by getting links with the anchor i want to rank for. :)
also, postition 1 and 2 are very much different. I read something like more than 12% (maybe more) less people click the 2nd link than the first link. When you are talking about maybe 2000 searches a day on one keyword, your talking about losing 200 or so visitors, and its even more of a loss if you get something like 4000 searches for that keyword.

Yes, it's your site!

Thanks guys for your responses. I haven't got a single backlink with this keyword, whereas position 1 has has a whole bunch of them. I'll do some backlink work over the next few weeks.

Yes, your site!
:P
I'll be targetting a different keyphrase instead (once I've gotten the domain changed), so you'll get your top position back soon enough anyway. :)

Why would you want to change that domain carlee? It's perfect.

I do not have these keywords in my domain name, or as any page name within my site.

I think you answered your own question.

Plus some incoming keyword links and you should be sorted.

Keyword domain counts for a fair bit, but less in Google than MSN.
