View Full Version : Looking for a managed and expandable cluster

One of the things MySpacePros is going to launch with everyone on the forums is going to instantly require a small cluster of work horses and we need a company that can expand on that cluster and manage the growth as we won't have the time to do so.

Can anyone recommend a company for this application? As much as I love mediatemple, this is far beyond their scope.

If you can afford it, Joyent's Accelerator (http://joyent.com/accelerator) is one of the best and allows easy scaling in the future should you need it. They definitely know their stuff. You won't find your typical "2TB bandwidth for $150" there, though.

Other solutions include www.bitpusher.com and www.razorblue.com (based in the UK but have space in both their NY datacenter and London). Both are managed providers who should be able to do clusters - I know RazorBlue does. We use them for our website (but we have an unmanaged server in their NY location).

Myspacepros shouldn't need a cluster yet. You can easily keep this site going on a Dual Xeon's with 4gb of ram and 2 fast SCSI drives in Raid 1. If anything, you can get a spare DB server to offload that work from the webserver. You can also disable some VB features that hog memory like post updateing thru the db, etc, etc...

It's not for myspacepros. This server runs on a dual opty, 4gb, sata raid 1 without about 60 other sites just fine.

It's a project we're working on I'm worried about. Two actually, both of which are going to receive in the tens of millions hits a day. One of which will receive this amount of traffic in the first day.

Softlayer can do clusters on a per user basis. It's not advertised but all you have to do is contact them. I think it's 100 a month extra to cluster them and all the internal traffic between the servers is unlimited. Steadfast is another place that would be recommended.

LayeredTech has something called a GridLayer that you can add addition servers and resources online in minutes. They dont manage it so you would have to higher a 3rd party to do so.

As long as the cluster is a single managable unit that works for me. Do you have a contact with LT you would recommend?

I see - in that case I suggest a nice cluster setup. I wish I knew more about managed hosting providers, I have never researched "managed" as I manage all of our servers, but I will look around.

JaguarPC has the best managed dedicated hosting I've seen for the money but they don't do phone support. You might be able to contact Eric and work something out though.

Thanks! Yes, we do clusters and load balancing.
