Just got an email from Google:
"Thank you for advertising with Google AdWords. After reviewing your
account, we've found that one or more of your ads or keywords does not
meet our guidelines. You can see your disapproved ad(s), the reason for
disapproval, and editorial suggestions, from the Disapproved Ads page

Sure enough you cannot use "myspace" in your ads anymore:

Anyone else get this message?

It might mean not enough ads to display for your content? So less money...

I'm still seeing adsense showing them, but not on Google. Someone should digg this.
I guess we'll see what happens!! Hopefully more than 1.5 cents per click will happen

I'll digg it for ya anyways but this is not a big deal. Let's say I format a new ad:
Hot New Layouts!
Celebs, Flowers, Hip Hop
Cool Layouts 4 your Profile
Still 1.5 cents a click, you just can't use the actual name "Myspace"... the ads will go nowhere you may just see changes like the above. In fact check your sites, I already see plenty of changes like this.

I wouldnt worry about them allowing myspace resource sites to display ads.
They're just protecting themselves and their clients by not allowing evey tom, ***** and harry to bid on trademarked terms.

hmmm will this affect search engine rankings for keywords in google such as "myspace layouts" "myspace codes" "myspace backgrounds" etc etc.
Looks like the stealers/spammers at hotfreelayouts will be making a mint with their favoured "layouts" rank.

April 10th, 2007, 05:24 PM
No it won't do anything for google rankings. AdSense and AdWords play no part in your rankings for the search engines.

I can't really understand this. How can using myspace in your ads actually be against trademark law? Why isn't google stopping people from using words like Ipod, Apple, Microsoft, Dell, etc. etc. in their ads...
Myspace obviously complained to them about it, so they changed the policy, and this may be one of the first steps on the way to myspace trying to stop people from using their own custom resources. Once myspace rolls out their own resources, they obviously will want to kill the competition. And this is one of the ways to do that.

This affects me in no way whatsoever but it furthers my loathing for google. They are without a doubt, the most anal, hypocritical company I can think of. They come across as this "do no evil" entity but are solely in it for themselves and of course shareholders (of which I'm not one...DAMN). They talk about trademark infringement yes like benahue mentioned, they don't seem to have a problem with a zillion other trademarks being advertised. ANd let's not forget their stealing news articles. Hmm...wonder if it has anything to do with their own adsense ads plastered throughout myspace.

I think the title should be changed here cause its just your account that has been hosed. Mine is still kicking butt and I just got a Frig from Google cause of the money I have spent with them.

I called this a few days ago. I would not be surprised if myspace is rolls out a proprietary layout system by years end.

"How can using myspace in your ads actually be against trademark law?"
If somebody bids on the term "Myspace", they are using somebody else's trademark to generate traffic for their own site.
"Why isn't google stopping people from using words like Ipod, Apple, Microsoft, Dell, etc. etc. in their ads..."
There are plenty of distributors and affiliates who are authorized to promote and sell Apple, Microsft, Dell products. Do you know any authorized distributors of Myspace?

My ad was disaproved and suspended because of this trademark issue.
I emailed their support because I'm still seeing ads from other websites with the word myspace in it. Why is my ad disaproved and theirs is still running.

Because you are not a big spender there. Neither am I for that matter, it seems they cancelled half my campaigns but the rest.... they left for me to take down myself as I'm sure they will be gone in a few days anyway.

An interesting development although not unprecedented since people cannot bid on other Trademarked terms.
I wonder, given the ties between Google and Myspace, if the next logical step to this is to stop serving Adsense on sites whose domain names contain the term, 'myspace,' for example, pimpmyspace.org?

I got an answer on my email..
The phrase 'Myspace' has recently been added by the copyright owner of
this phrase as a protected term on the AdWords system.
Our AdWords Specialists review the ads in our programme. Due to the volume
of ads we receive, some ads may run for a while on Google before
undergoing the approval process. We assure you that we are working
diligently to apply the same criteria to all our ads.

I just checked into my google adsense account and I was shocked. I earned alot of money. It would take me 3-4 days to earn this much, I earned it with still 12 hours to go. Though, I am frightened at the same time. Lets keep our fingers crossed and hope google doesn't ban all the adsense accounts for myspace resource sites :((

I don't know what they'd gain by doing that. That would be a little too Yahooesque on their part.
But I can see the nightmarish scenario. You look at their TOS one day and it says, "No porn sites, no sites that promote hate speech and violence, and oh yea, no myspace resources sites."

No, but I know that if you're not an affiliate of a company that distributes ipods, you're still allowed to have an adwords ad that says "Visit my Ipod review site." And you don't have to have any affiliate links on your site. Your adwords ad is still "legal." It falls under the fair use doctrine of trademark law.

I do see people getting around the tradmark thing by putting My Space Layouts in the ad, instead of Myspace Layouts.
I'm definitely seeing an increase on my ads. On all my units except the rectangle I almost never average lower than 5c a click. I need to do something about that rectangle and figure out another way to add in a different size. Some of my units pay as much as 10c a click, and my sites really aren't showing many other ads other than myspace ones. Theres an occasionally non-myspace ad, but most of them are still myspace-related ads.

Revenue for me has increased by 25 - 30% and holding. I dont see why G would ban myspace resource sites because unlike Yahoo, Google has great targeting and the msrs adwords advertisers are getting their ads shown exactly where they want them "on other msrs sites" and are not doing it to generate sales just traffic so they are getting exactly what they want unlike with Yahoo
