Hey guys, I am just about to be kicked off my host (luckily they have given me 5 days to vacate...) I was wondering if anyone has any opinions on media temples virtual dedicated servers?

http://www.mediatemple.net/webhosting/dv/pricing.htm

I was looking at the extreme package:

• 1 GB - Dedicated RAM
• 60 GB - Disk Storage
• 2 TB - Network Transfer

It says dedicated RAM so I presume no matter what others are using, I get 1GB? 2GB bandwidth, that's like 60GB a day... my current host didn't have any bandwidth data and want me to pay for their stats system in order to find out (which I won't seeing as I'm leaving in 5 days)... so I'm not sure exactly what mine is.

I know nothing of dedicated packages managed let alone unmanaged. So I thought I'd go with virtual dedicated servers for now. As I have a time limit (less than 5 days, when thinking about step-up and DNS switches) for everything to be set-up so I don't have much or any downtime.

When I have more time I can maybe looking into dedicated, but for now, does anyone recommend mediatemple and know anything of their virtual dedicated servers?

Thanks!

I just ordered one to play around with. It's not for me and I'm going to be cancelling mine. Setup was fast and so far I don't have real complaints. I just don't like the whole plesk control panel they have setup.

Just realised in pretty much posted this same question ages ago when I first joined. How quite moronic of me, nevertheless my question still stands!

What do you guys think of this package and it's possible limits and problems etc?

Because my previous hosts have been quite poor, I've never really had to use (or had...) or had experience in using a control panel. So No matter which is supplied it'll be new ground to me so I don't think, unless it really is complicated and difficult to use that this would be an issue for me.

plesk = blah!

Not really good for big sites IMO especially when dealing with site moves etc.

Also, since you got kicked off your host don't you think it would be a good idea to be looking at dedicated instead of VPS? Along with the obvious limitations of only being allocated a portion of the server resources, being on a VPS opens you up to being suspended for both bandwidth and simply using too much resources on the server. On a dedicated you can use all the resoruces the server can give you.

I'd like dedicated yes, but due to time limits, I was in a hurry to find something fast and I know very very little about servers. If anyone has any recommendations for a dedicated server that isn't too expensive, like $200p/month and under-ish, then for sure I'd be interested (managed, not unmanaged...)

Grab a server from here (http://www.softlayer.com/single_processor_dual_core.html) and then hire PlatinumServerManagement.com to move your website to it and to secure the server. It can be done in under 2 days.

I have hosting at The Planet right now I'm thinking of just switching to Softlayer. Their pricing seems pretty good and I'm not found of mergers.

well i have not used their VPS but I am using their grid servers and they are great. does the VPS offer the system to allocate and monitor CPU usage like the grid server has so you can have an idea if you are going to go over your allocated CPU usage.

We've been running Plesk for years and have moved servers many times. Did you not use the migration manager? You give the new plesk your old servers root information and it'll migrate the entire thing for you, accounts and all.

mt uses Plesk because it's the best! ;)

I hate plesk and have tons of sites broken and half installed because of it lol. I've lost who knows how much revenue because of all those sites/scripts I bought that haven't been able to generate any income. If you know what you are doing then go for it but if not, stick with cpanel which is great for noobs like me.
