Well for the past 4 months I have been running cutenews for my news system to use whenever I update the site. tonight when logging in I noticed there was about 1100 spam posts dating all the way back from the beginning when I first installed cutenews. Each one of these spam posts have like 50 outgoing links to viagra and such. So after my heart skipped a beat, I quickly deleted every single comment posts and disabled comments alltogether. There was no "nofollow" tag on these links either so do you think this could have effected my rankings in search engines?

if the links where indexed then its a good possibility they did.....search engines will not penalize you for sites linking to you but will for sites you link to if that site is in a bad neighborhood such as spammers generally are......

hey but now that they are gone once the search engines take notice it should help your rankings

A similar thing happened to me. I have a couple of sites that I have mobile blogs, and had comments and posting open for anyone. The sites were brand new, but kept getting notices that my sites are close to exceeding bandwidth every week. That just made me happy that the sites are getting popular, until I checked my awstats and noticed that the top searches were all porn related. I checked the site and the posts were normal, nothing unusual, however, the assholes had been spamming my comments with porn. Its too bad that I had to close the posts on the sites, unless invited.

I'd disable all comments unless you can A) add 3rd party software that will add captcha or b) disable.

I'd disable, it makes life much easier... MySpace Revenue (http://www.myspacerevenue.net)

Yeah it's sad but without Akismet I bet 99% of the wordpress blogs on the net would have comments disabled or be full of spam.

Tough choice.

Unless you are 100% up to date with Wordpress installations, it isn't just comments that get spammed - there was a XSS vulnerability in WP that allowed injection of hidden links to all sorts of nastiness.

I thought the new version of cutenews had captcha on it.
