I have heard many times that linking to sites that have been banned from google when link exchanging can also hurt your own site. Is there an easy way to see if a site is on googles shi* list so I can dump them from my link exchanges so I dont hurt my own site?

not 100% but just type there URL into the Google search box. If it returns no results then the site either has not been indexed or is banned

In February 2006, Google temporarily banned BMW's German site for black hat SEO. If you did a search for bmw.de you got no results whatsoever. But the website itself was up and running. Also, if you typed site:bmw.de in Google, you also got no results.

BMW's ban was lifted pretty quickly though. So you won't see the above results today.

In Google, are you typing in:
domain.com without quotes
or site:domain.com
or "domain.com" ?

The first command simply takes you to the website, unless the site is banned.
The second command shows how many pages Google has indexed for that site
The third command shows webpages that mention domain.com in readable text on those webpages

if at least one URL shows up then the site is not banned. could be their site is built in such a way that is preventing Google from properly indexing it

I was just typing in "www.domain.com" without the quotes.

so yea, i guess I was doing it wrong.

Actually, I was incorrect. Typing in domain.com at the google homepage will usually list the domain.com at the top along with websites that mention domain.com in the readable text.

If you're typing in www.domain.com and getting only two results, is one of the results the domain itself? If the site is not banned, it should be one of the search results.

If there are only two results, then not many sites are mentioning www.domain.com, according to Google.

If a site is banned from google, there will be a greyed out pagerank in the toolbar. It won't even say 0/10 it will just be grey. That is the best way to find out.
