What does the "rel=nofollow" tag do? It tells the search engines not to credit the link for ranking. The nofollow tag was introduced to combat spam in blog comments.
OK, want to see an example of the nofollow tag? Go to http://www.freecodesource.com/index.php?page=linkExchange/all . Then on your IE menu, do a View > Source . Then do an Edit > Find and then search for nofollow.
Why would a site want to nofollow all its link partners? The only reason I can think of is that the webmaster wants real backlinks from its link partners and then provide no credit to the partners in return. So essentially, the webmaster is accumulates search engine credit (Google PageRank, as an example)while giving out none.
freecodesource.com is among the top 10 on Google for myspace layouts, by the way. I don't recommend exchanging links with a site that nofollows you unless you just want some traffic. No, I don't recommend the nofollow approach when linking to other sites unless you want to anger your link partners.

A now follow link is worthless for SEO and you should demend that your links are follow or atleast get a discount.

well since i started doing myspace sites and doing link trades with msrs owners i have realized that there are very few msrs owners that are concerned with PR or link credit they are all interested in one thing TRAFFIC. I came to realize this when I had a PR5 low traffic site and could not even get link exchanges with sites that had higher traffic but were PR0

Search engines, Google in particular, will sometimes penalize or even ban sites with "sitewide" links from another site. It's probably a good idea to request nofollow attribute to begin with. Inbound links from Myspace and other sites will do plenty for PR/ranking. Use links trades for traffic and exposure.

Lyzy, I disagree with your point about Google penalizing sitewide links from another site. If you look at the top 10 results for myspace layouts, the majority of the sites have sitewide links.
A site that nofollows the link to your site is robbing you of SEO benefits. From what I can tell, webmasters normally do not announce that they will nofollow you. So nofollowing link partners is often cheating on link partners without telling them.
Sure, I love links from Myspace. However, there's no guarantee Myspace won't also nofollow external links in the future, especially if they think it will combat spam.

they will only penalize you if its "out of the norm" for that specific niche of websites. Google knows that msrs sites are famous for doing sitewide link exchanges and have been forever so there is little chance of being penalized with a myspace site

Not only msrs, but all types of sites do site-wide link exchanges.

I hate webmasters who add the nofollow attribute to links.
I traded links with four websites owned by freecodesource and then i noticed that they used the nofollow attribute so i took them down. All of their sites do it, it annoys me.

The use of the 'nofollow' attribute is actually preferred amongst some webmaster circles. This is of course not always the case but is easily justified.
You'll notice a lot of older, established sites will use 'nofollow' because they are selling advertising space, just link juice, so to speak. Less juice leaks is a way for them to compete in the keyword marketplace, retaining SERP ranks, and still sell ad space.
