Can you get to many backlinks to your site in a short period of time to be penalized?

Yes, you sure can.

What is the set amount?

I added 3 back links yesterday and hope it wasn't to much.

Nope. If your website becomes popular, it will get backlinks itself like crazy.

When you get a sitewide on like 5 websites in one day that have thousands of indexed pages on each site, it's too much and you risk being put in the 'sandbox'.

3 subject related links is fine. Just dont spam links on blogs, law sites, sports sites.. unrelevant crap just to get 'links'.

Yes it can hurt you... and it happens to most of us at first b/c we are getting so many links from myspace so fast. That is the real problem, not 3 sitewide links which will not hurt you.

but what would have happened? it was fine one day than bam everything dropped, i think its cause of my titles, since im trying to do a proper 301 redirect since i have a pr 1 domain.com than a pr 5 www.domain.com and its indexing both.

there is no set maximum number of backlinks a site can get per day. the thing is to make it look as natural as possible......for instance Google knows that in general a brand new site is not going to come out having 500 incoming links while on the other hand a site that is a year old can easily get 500 backlinks in a day and suffer no penalty for it

Same thing has happened to me and just happened again in the last day or so. I added some link exchanges and obtained some sitewide links and my website dropped off for my terms.

Google may have did a slight adjustment its algo concerning either links exchanges or sitewide links........or you might have just finally got to many compared to your sites one way links

Hoping that it changes soon. We'll see if not I'll have to rethink things.

Nobody know the algo process but one factor that is fairly certain is that a sudden rush of backlinks ot a new site should not incur a penalty IF it continues to garner more and more backlinks at a consistent rate.

There are arguments for and against, but sitewide stuff is playing with fire. Just don't do it.

That's BS, don't worry about backlinks too quick.. look at sites that get slashdot'd, sites picked up on the news etc, they end up ranking extremely quickly and are not penalized at all.

Maybe too many RECIPRICAL links, but there is *NOTHING* you can do about being linked to, so therefore you would NOT be penalized. That would defeat all of google and every other search engines algorithms... the whole POINT of their algo's is to detect what other sites feel is important. Therefore, get as many backlinks in a day as you can and be done with it.

I've used link networks in the past, built too many links, and gotten pages penalized or even banned out of Google...

link networks and link farms are a different story.... getting links on penalized sites etc isn't a good thing. I guess I should have been more specific... a lot of QUALITY links won't hurt. for instance, if you get picked up by news stations and bloggers, that won't hurt you... it should help..

It's like sex, have sex with a lot of clean partners, you'll be fine. have sex with some dirty dirty people you catch diseases :P

My site has crabs. I'll get meds and it will be safe again. Burn the bedsheets.

I wouldn't reccomend getting all your SEO information from MP, there are way too many myths in SEO that are completely false. I am quite experienced with SEO and am in the top 10 for many, many keywords.

The most important aspect is to make sure that the links are related to your site and not on link farms. Google knows you cannot control who links to your site, but they do monitor sporadic jumps in BL #'s.

No one really knows the exact safe point, but rest assured that 3 is no where near the limit. ;)

Well generally the ones that post info for SEO on here tend to be experienced and actually know what we are talking about....this ain't DP lol.......I would agree though that if there is a lot of debate on the forums about something to look it up for your self from a reputable source like Arron Walls website, Matt Cutts Blog, ect.

As for myself I have been doing it for years and have worked on everything from small hobby sites to corporate websites and even a network of 60+ websites

after reading this post i wouldn't exactly say the only ones that post info are the knowledgeable ones :-p no offense, and i know it probably sounds rude. Most of my sites are ranked on the first page for multiple large keywords, I've never been penalized for too many links too quick.

I rank for multiple large searches as well and I've never been penalized for too many links too quick. There again, I never participated in link farms or any of that other BS either.
