The ones that stood out the most to me where the ones Panic! was selling. Those were amazing!

Xlove, Selena, Kasami2k4 are also really great layout designers in my opinion. :)

yep that does make lot of difference, i have to start doing that but its hard to find different images :(

We can have 3 or 4 unbiased judges - maybe Greg, and Des etc. And set it up as a poll or we can have the users vote - and just to keep it even so that friends dont vote for friends, we can have the layouts posted anonymously.

This sounds interesting... keeping everything anonymous would be a great idea, except some people have distinct styles that are very noticeable... iron out the details and get this thing going.

Ok, how about this -
1. Start a new thread announcing the contest
2. Set a submission closing date
3. Have the layouts emailed to my email address - 3 layouts max, and all sent at the same time.
5. Start a new a new thread, with links to the layouts and have the designs voted on.

keep the car section :P why not give people a challenge, everyone always makes the same stuff... lets see how people do with something different.

I suggest setting up a criteria of how the layouts will be evaluated and some basic rules, such as maximum size for each image... which resolutions they should fit in... etc.

Time frame - final date for submission and final date for voting and results. Categories that layouts need to be - which as of now seem to be: abstract, celebrities, and cars.

Abstract seems to be a very vague category? Would that include pattern layouts, girlie layouts, etc? Make sure your specific about that when this contest becomes official. Just a suggestion.
