To really sum it up, Who is the best and the worst host? I use Host Gator and I am pretty happy with them so far. I was put on hold for a long time a couple of times while calling the customer service center. but that's okay because I rarely have to call them as there are no problems. What about you? Share your good/bad experiences...

Thank you for sharing your experience. Nope, I haven't heard of that host. but that means you are pretty successful running non-myspace sites as well. :D LOL

I haven't actually used them yet but I am going to because they seem great! Lots of space for a good price and a free domain. I know a few people that use them and are happy with them, hope this helps

hostgator and dreamhost, and also 1and1 are all great shared hosting companies... but once you start getting way too much traffic to handle, watch them screw you over..... they'll pull the plug without even notifying you...

once you start getting a ton of traffic, start looking for a dedicated server immediately.

Wiredtree.com = the BEST dedicated servers. :)

Thanks barcodeunit, that's a million dollar worth info that everybody needs to know beforehand.

Suppose I reach that level and If I don't take action in time, Would I also lose all my files? or would there be a backup copy with my host, say hostgator???

It seems like we have to start backing up our databases and files daily from now on?

hostgator is ok for small sites but now way good for resource sites,

dream host is just dodgey when u get some ok traffic.

Mediatemple is pretty good.
Dreamhost isn't that great at all. Downtime is not acceptable.
Verio hosting is horrible from experience.

hostxxx and dreaxxx, and also 1and1 are all great
Dude! I almost banned you on the spot in shock at reading that.

1&1 suck (http://forums.digitalpoint.com/showthread.php?t=60380) (long thread on DP but well worth the read). Simple as that.

one and one sucks (http://www.namepros.com/domain-name-discussion/159651-1and1-com-hater-aaaaccckk.html) thread at Namepros

And of course, our very own thread here at MySpacePros about how badly 1and1 totally SUCK (http://www.myspacepros.com/forum/showthread.php?t=502).

My advice, for anyone that's interested in my opinion, is to AVOID 1&1.

Kasami2k4

UNMETERED bandwidth, not unlimited. Unlimited doesn't exist. And they give you about 1TB a month. And NORMALLY its not the BW you gotta worry bout. its server usage.midphase is OKAY for sites with under 10K a day

Good experiences:
Liquidweb: Good VPS/VDS hosting for a while, helped me with the complete basics with quick response to technical problems.

Bad Experiences:
Siteground: Started well, ended with my worst web hosting experience to date. In fact overall cost me to drop 1000 UV a day due to downtime/errors on their behalf. For a site starting out dont go near, you'll work hard and get ruined once your even slightly larger.

Then to cap it off theyre ticket/support system is TERRIBLE. Live help - but only for pre-sales. And a ticket system that doesnt work, literally spent 3 days with NO way to contact them. Was being re-directed everywhere when talking to the easy to get to Sales team.

Siteground - Worst hosting I have had.

Hope this helps :)

Siteground - Worst hosting I have had.

I have to agree with this, I paid for 12 month service with them and had them transfer one of my resource sites from a Hostgator reseller account as it had exceeded the BW there.

They moved the site but couldn't get it working right so I had to get somebody else to sort things out for me.

Then over the next few weeks the site suffered more down time than I've ever had with any other service.

SiteGround not recommended

Back in the day, I tried GoDaddy. Um, major suck-fest... They're fine for sites with no traffic I suppose. I also tried HostGator for less than a month. They shut me down with no warning for bandwidth utilization. I tried colocating my own server at a provider near where I live and that worked for about 2 months until my traffic was impacting every other customer of theirs and they capped my bandwidth. Ouch.

I've been with OrangeFiber.com for a while now with zero complaints. Great customer service thus far. I've got a dedicated server with 10mbps unmetered bw for $109/month. It's unmanaged, though, so you've got to know your way around linux to some degree. The trick with them is to email sales for a custom quote and you'll end up with a better-than-advertised deal. Working on getting a second server for another project...

I do like:
Hostgator (reseller account) for my smaller sites,
Layered Tech (dedicated) for my Myspace website.

I had a reseller account with FatNetwork.
They were the worst of the worst.

I have used hostdepartment and they are great for most sites, very seldom downtime and when there is its never been more than 1 hour, unlimited domains, space, bandwidth (good if not using alot of CPU cycles) I have always hosted 5 domains at a time with them and had got traffic up to 12k a day between the 5 domains all msrs sites with no problems. Have had an average of 5gigs of bandwidth used per day again no problems

I think the best thing about them though is you can pay month to month, no contracts, and they accept PayPal as a payment method....oh and when you sign up your account is created instantly no waiting and no setup fees

Oh for me....

The best one for shared hosting of smaller sites is defo BLUEHOST.COM
BLUEHOST ALLLL THE WAY!!!

I dunno about bad as I've only been on 2....and have never experienced any of the nightmares of some of the webmasters here have..but apparently Dreamhost sucks with the dowtime issues they seem to have a LOT of!

I read about some people having problem with godaddy. I am getting worried now. If my site gets a lot of traffic, will they shut down with out letting me know?
If that is true, then its not company you want to trust. My site is new and doesnt get a lot of hits, but its growing, so i am getting to worry. Any member who had bad luck with them and want to share your experience with me? I just want to prepair my self ya know ;):).

For individual sites:
Lunarpages, Inmotionhosting

VPS for multiple sites:

Is there really such a thing as unlimited space AND bandwith from shared hosting companies? I found this http://proserv-hq.com/, not sure if it is shared or dedicated. Call me a noob lol. But that seems really cheap, too cheap to be real. I was going to try it but wanted to see if anybody tried it yet and had a good/bad experience. Thanks.

The worst I have EVER seen is Godaddy. They have absolutely NO customer service skills and their uptime is THE WORST. One of my smaller sites had been hosted on there getting about 14k hits a day and it was down all the time even though I hadn't used even a fraction of what they promised and when I did get close to it they shut me down completely and offered no explanation.

So far I havent had any troubles with dreamhost and yahoo is the best for uptime and support as long as you host your images elsewhere because bandwitch can get extremely high because they don't have big packages.

Yes and no, I use a shared hosting company for my smaller sites that offers unlimited bandwidth and space but even though those sites use TB's a month of bandwidth they are not extremely busy so I am not using to many CPU resources which is what those companies do not explain to it buyers is that if your site uses to much CPU and resource time they will cut you off

I can't stand Dotster! Never sign up with them. I was having a lot of problems from them since day 1, not returning my phone calls when they said they would and it took forever (like a month) for them to send me my refund.

Dathorn hosting is good. However, the owner can be a bit of a jerk at times. If you can get past that, it's a good deal.

I suggest not using Bluehost for an MS resources site. They pulled the plug on Satisfaction.com without notice because they said it was using up too many resources. They then gave me 48 hours of FTP access to get my files off of their server.

IMHO, if one is really serious about getting into the MS resource biz they should start off in the beginning with a dedicated server.

My needs may be beyond most of the people who have posted here, but for me:

I have 100Mbps connection, of which it averages 60mbps throughout the day.

I use 17TB data throughput per month.

Average RAM usage 6GB. Average Load 10.

Now, very few hosting companies can accommodate these requirements.

The company that has done the best for me is ThePlanet. This is really only usefull information for process intensive sites that generate 50k - 100k visitors per day.

I could list tons of "worst" but I think then that these lists over shadow those who should get big KUDOS for great services and great prices.

Steadfast is a great host.

I have a dedicated server. I have used them now for well over a year and I really can't imagine going anywhere else. Customer service is above average, uptime is above average, and cost is about average and maybe even a little under.

Thanks Jason, I think when I return from moving and getting my internet back I will sign up with them. I have some awesome domain names I'm going to purchase...

Off topic, I know not to purchase the domain through the same hosting company but does anyone recommend a good cheaper place to purchase domains? I always bought mine with the same company that did my hosting, and although never had issues, I want to test out this new theory.

I host a few sites on there including xoospace.com. The traffic is actually balanced between two servers. The bandwidth I stated above is between both. But the load and RAM is the average on each server. My sites are database intensive. Every page load has 20 - 50 queries to the db.

do you host more than one site on that line? or is it just for xoospace.com
