Is a dedicated server recommended or required to run a resource site using some sort of a turnkey solution? Just wondering how much server load these sites are doing

In my opinion you can start with shared hosting but know along with that can possibly come slow speeds etc. The is having fast servers that are stable. With that said if you have funds then I would say start with a dedicated server or maybe a VPS just so you present quality.

just not sure if some of these scripts i was looking at would be easy to install on the server as i don't know much about how dedicated servers work and what all needs to be manually setup on them

You can always get managed dedicated hosting and they will help you with stuff. Given you are just starting off you can get a VPS over a dedicated server, then you can make a switch after you grow.

Not until you're doing over 10,000 uniques per day. It also depends on how much database usage your site has.

If you host your images off site you can use a virtual dedicated server till you hit around 15k uniques a day

Lunarpages and IXwebhosting are great. Dreamhost SQL is slow allllllllllll the time..
And shared and dedicated?
Think of it this way
You have a piece of bread and limited amount of butter. The farther you spread the butter, the thinner it gets ._. bad metaphor I guess, but for small sites, start with a little host. Dreamhsot is nice. for big ones yeah.. You HAVE TO GO DEDICATED.

imho, when a ms resource site reaches ~20k uniques/day it'll require a dedicated server. at that point you'll be making more than enough revenue to afford the additional expense. if you've never run a dfs before, consider having it professionally set up and managed.
