View Full Version : Anyone else have a non indexed myspace domain and want to compete?

I'm pretty new to SEO and have a ton to learn but find it pretty interesting and a kind of fun challenge. Though it is pretty frustrating as well when you get bumped for no obvious reason sometimes lol.
Anyway, I thought it would be fun if a few people put up test sites in the myspace arena and all had friendly competitions to play and learn from each other. We could all start out with brand new sites on unindexed domains and all decide on certain keywords and see how ranks best after a set amount of time and then compare notes and tips along the way and hopefully all learn from it at the same time...and if not then at least have fun and maybe even make a little money getting some search traffic heheh.
The idea:
- group all start with new, unindexed domain.
- all use the free crappy turnkey script and can do whatever modifications they feel needed...or even leave completely vaniilla.
- all agree on various keywords/phrases to try to rank for at specific times (like see who ranks best for "myspace layouts", by the end of March...then agree on something else to try. Or maybe a list of keywords/phrases to work on at the same time
- all agree to share as much info on said domains and techniques. So if you don't want to share what seems to work or what doesn't work for you then just keep playing on your own. This would be for people that want to learn and help people at the same time. It would be for fun and as open as possible.
Anyone interested in playing? I may just do it myself as a personal challenge and to try to learn more but could be fun with a group. Shouldn't cost you much beyond the domain reg and basic hosting (should even be able to use dreamhost for this heheh).

I have a domain that I'm working on right now that isn't indexed or anything but it's not using a turnkey and has all original content. I'm pretty new to SEO stuff so it might be interesting to see how it all goes but I'm sure I wouldn't get anywhere :)

More like a collaboration that a flat out competition.
Having the same script would make it easier to compare though...could always grab another domain for something like this...$7 entry cost heheh ;).
Although the idea would be for fun and to share info, another idea that could be interesting would be to make it more of a real competition. Like something where everyone agrees to take part and agrees to the terms and then plays for "pinkslips" and everyone agrees that whoever is the winner at the end gets all the sites involved lol.

I like these idea Ron and happy to start entirely from scratch with a new domain name and a turnkey script. I assume there would be sources for the script and set rules. It would help me with SEO too and sounds like a nice team effort.

I started a site a week ago, and only one page is indexed. But it's the most random page (http://lytrequest.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=6&sid=ea1dcbfcd4c16b33cb08879a758732e1). Would I still be able to enter the competition? I just wanna learn more.
If not, then I have no problem buying a new domain.

Izzy - it means that your site is on google or other search engines and can be found easily. Hope that helps.

Great idea Ron, I'd love to participate but I'm completely swamped. For those just beginning SEO I'd recommend doing some reading of the forums at highrankings.com. Just read/search everything before asking questions there, they seem quick to step on newbies.
Chris...

basically it means that Google knows about your site and has done an initial crawl and you have a page "indexed" in Google.

Just installed the MSLS script last week on a domain which hasn't been indexed on so I'll think I'll give it a shot when I get editing finished.
Anyways scilynt do you have a set date where all this starts? :)

great idea, i wish i could participate but got too much crap to do, would love to hear how it turns ou though :D
if anyone wants to borrow a domain name let me know, but you have to give it back though when it hits a pr7 and you have like 100k traffic coming to it.

www.freeturney.net/scripts.
Just wondering if we can actually do as many modifications to the script as we want, as long as we start with the basic script and work our way from that? I mean, if I were to say, completely rework the entire site, including much of the layout, that would still be within the contest correct? It would be still running the basics of it, but just heavily modified i guess you could say. Since I'm guessing that the point of this contest is to see what kind of SEO and modifications produce the best results?

Can we get a private forum for this? :)

I'd say we could use any script/custom design we wanted too, its just the point of sharing with others what we did to increase our serps for the site.
It's just easier to use the free one as its an "experiment" and not everyone might want to lay down the money for a copy of greg's script or whatever else.

I've contacted Ron (Scilynt) about making this a MySpacePros contest and I'll give away a copy of (msls) to the winner, but I'm waiting to hear back from him.
At which time I'll setup a forum for it.

Good because i just tried modifying the layout section of the free turnkey, and my god it was a nightmare. Aparently you have to code each layout individually and add it to the site manually. I'm sure I could manage something, but maybe not.

just a suggestion, if this contest does go through, can we make it so that you are not allowed to have the keyword in your domain name... would make it more interesting...

I think everyone should use the freeturnkey script. The prize sounds good I could use another copy but I am alreadys swamped with projects......maybe next round. I have competed in some rather large SEO comps and would be willing to be a judge/moderator though

The more I read the more I wish I had time to give this a shot :). Here are some suggested keywords for the comp. The left table is top 10 myspace searchs (minus music related). Right is top 10 myspace layout searches. Reviewing the data, I'd say the emo or tiny keywords would be easy for someone to top 10 in. Keep in mind that google sandboxes some sites on competitive terms.

Premade myspace layout is relativly easy I had a previous site get in the top 10 in less than 2 months for it.

Once Ron gets back to me I'll post an update.
If all goes well, we'll be giving away $1,000 in prizes to the winners rather than just an (msls) license, so stay tuned!

The rules have yet to be determined.
Scilynt
March 5th, 2007, 10:51 PM
Sorry for the slow reply. Busy on the weekends :(.
Anyway it was just an idea and most important behind the idea was for people to be able to contribute and learn and share from each other. Having prizes might take away from the idea of sharing tips but hopefully not ;).
If it becomes an official thing then Greg would be the one with the final word on "rules" but I am sure he is open to suggestions as well.
Personally I would think it would be most fair and easier to compare if everyone had to start out the same way. Meaning new or unindexed domain name, same script to start with and same keywords/phrases to rank for. I would think modding the script would be fine as long as everyone starts with the same resources. I mean it wouldn't be as fair if everyone had different scripts when some are already optimized better. The idea would be to see who can do the best with SEO not which script they choose works best ;). I also like the idea of torturing people with that crappy turnkey script. That way everyone has to suffer adding new content unless they mod it heheh. That is if you even bother adding content since in the end it would be rank.
As for domain name, I personally think as long as it's new or unindexed it shouldn't matter too much. Would be better to announce the keywords to rank for after people choose a domain anyway so then it doesn't matter heheh. Would also be nice to have a good handful of terms to rank for and then have points associated with where you rank for each one with whoever earns the most total points would win first place. Like for example, maybe you get 5 points for being the highest ranking of the contest for "myspace layouts" but only get 2 points for being second highest ranking for "generators" or something. Could also add in some twist like points for sites with the best average CTR, most users online, most overall linkbacks...things like that.
Anyway, those are just some of the things I was thinking of when I had the idea. But it was going to be open to suggestions to see what people actually wanted to do so just opinions on my part so far ;).
Could be a lot of fun and now maybe very rewarding heheh.

I agree with Scilynt, i think everyone should start off with the same script and then mod it for SEO.

March 6th, 2007, 10:33 AM
Hey Scilynt have you seen how they did the contest for the world SEO champ. Basically the scoring was pretty simple. They picked the keyword and then at the end of 3 months or whatever the timelimit is they scored like such
Highest placement in Google - 5 points
Highest placement in Yahoo - 3 points
Highest placement in MSN - 2 points
Of course they had 2nd and 3rd places as well and if there was a tie they went with whoever had the highest backlink count by Yahoo.
