View Full Version : Minimum Posts Count Restrictions

With the recent PM spamming by people with no posts, we have instituted Post Count limitations on certain actions.
In order for you to:
Post Attachments
Post Links
Send Email
Send Private Message
You must have a post count of at least 25. I'm hoping this will cut down on the amount of PM and link SPAM we've been getting lately.

Well I've sent/recieved about 30 Private messages since joining here mostly to do with advertising/purchasing layouts. Guess I should start posting more on the forum in order to continue making purchases. :) No big deal I agree with the restrictions given the recent spam by certain members.

That's specifically the guy I'm referring to. If that happens, report it to a mod and we'll ban them.

PMd for the first time today regarding a group buy - it must've been before the new rule was in place. Looks like I'll be upping my post count too =)

Seems that 10 posts would be better since we have lots of lurkers around buying stuff but not really wanting to post
Best thing would be to put in some mod so that posts on useless boards like the spam house or the heated topics one don't count

GRRR... I thought for some reason I read the post count was 15 to send PM's. Ive been doing deals over PM with many people. I just went to send a PM to someone about a deal that actually I am unhappy with and got a message saying "your post count must be 25 or higher to send PM". Im NOT happy since I just spent 20 min typing up a long message to make my case to this person. UGH!!!!! Now its GONE and I have to wait to contact this person untill I make 10 more posts.

I agree! I cant reply to my own pm's even at the moment and cant just easily boost my post count because the posts have to be so many words so I have to make up stupid stuff to say just to count as a post.... this post for example :)

Geee.... bad luck for me, I'm still new in this forum my posts count isn't many yet :( . I never send spams and I hate spams, but sometimes I need to use PM to ask to a seller in marketplace about some terms that we'd like to deal and I feel not comfortable if I asked that in the thread itself (well I hope you understand the situation).
And maybe this situation also needs to be considered, how about a new user who has a good faith and want to sell his product? He won't be able to post his product's links? and he can't reply PMs? if he has bad intention he won't pay for $5 to post in marketplace section, does he? (sorry, my examples are a lot about marketplace section as I often been there).
Btw, don't get me wrong, I'm not against this rule, I support in against spamming, I even want to add if you really go with this rule, please BAN users who after reaching 25 posts and he changes his mind to be a spammer :).
Okay, maybe some solutions are:
1. Let the seller's permission free from this rule.
2. Limit number of recipients when sending PM.
3. (maybe makes more hassle) initiate captcha image when sending PM.
Okay, that's my opinion, wow it's such a long post (maybe I should divide it to increase my posts count  ). Thanks for reading!

February 28th, 2007, 08:40 PM
LOL... what I've been thinking of happens, my previous post was started even before last page exists. And it seems everyone (especially sellers) need to catch magic 25 posts count, including me

February 28th, 2007, 09:18 PM
Bringing it down to 10 would probably still work. We would just have to watch for post spamming to get those 10 post. Unless there is a way to restrict sending pms but not affecting receiving or replying to pms?
Also, would be nice to lift the limit from MSRS and MSLS owners ;).

Lurker here. 25 posts is a lot for me. On the main forum I visit, I just hit the 500 post mark after 3.5 years. I am a part of 3 of the group buys and am planning on purchasing more. I like to lurk at a forum for a while before I post and I don't like to post unless I have something useful to contribute.

Well.....If you are shy and very opinionated like me, post restrictions like this helps to bring you out of your shell.
i think it's important that the post keeps coming and flowing that is what powered forums. so in an essence it's a good thing. you know we all hate stale site with nothing new.
believe me all you need is to send the first post, once you do that, you'll discover that you are shooting more posts like crazy.
so hey just dive right in. the water is not cold at all. ...:-)

I am ok because I don't sell anything on here.It could be 1000 posts and wouldn't bother me.But having paid to post something in the marketplace and then not being able to do business through the forum I had paid to post in with someone who hasn't got 25 post would bug me.Spamming wasn't a big deal..ok so we got a few pms......thats what the delete button is for.

Does this filter prevent others from sending you a PM? I had dealings going on with somebody before the filter was placed, while my post count was still below the threshold, and now I don't know if they were just unable to answer my PM queries or if they were throwing money away by ignoring me.

mcfox
March 4th, 2007, 11:28 AM
A post count of 15 is nothing and can only benefit the forums as a whole as well as bringing a few members out of their lurker status which is only good for them. :)
Forum spam, the mods can deal with immediately but PM spam tends to go unreported - at least for a while - so it's more difficult to deal with. Having a (very) small post count requirement can cut that down considerably.

I thought this section of the board was for annoucements? I'm not wrong though... because it's an advert for a product, not an annoucement about the forum. So, it's spam. Isn't it enough it comes to our PM's here unwanted (for some) that is also has to come to my personal e-mail inbox? I have enough spam to deal with from places I am not signed up to, I'd prefer not to get it from places I signed up to and asked not to be sent spam from.

I went about it originally in a light hearted ironic (see the topic...) way, how can you not see that... Mr J. (Just to point out, me refering to you as Mr J in this post is actually a reference to my first posts where I am joking about, I feel I have to explain that to you, because you take everything as an insult).
If you re-read the first 2 posts I made on this without getting all defensive upon seeing my username you will see there are no ""antics"" here. Only when PGZ replies with a serious reponse - telling me I was wrong when clearly I am not as obviously I should be allowed to say I'd prefer not to have junk sent to my personal inbox - do I also reply with a serious post with my point in a more blunt way.
I am stunned at how you have reacted. Anyway, problem is solved now, I added the senders e-mail to filter into my recycle bin.

You could always check their profile for their email address if its listed?
I have seen some "1 more post........." posts in market place threads just to add to their post count which can be annoying. 15 posts is better than 25 though. :)

Well, once you have 15 posts you can send a private message or PM and when you have 100 posts, you can use the pager feature. :)

Does the restriction mean u cant send em or can u reply to them. I didnt read all 6 pages so sorry if it was already answered.
