ThePlanet.com and SurpassHosting.com - What kind of site are you running? What's hosted on it now? I don't work for a hosting company but I'll help you out.

steadfast.net - they have amazing customer support, if you sign up for gold management they do everything you need... including security patches, apache optimizing, offsite backups. I've tried theplanet, and I like steadfast a lot better.

Been using Ev1 / The Planet for over 3 years now and they have been really good. They are pretty fast with resolving issues and haven't had any major ones yet.

Yes, SoftLayer is the best. A little bit pricey but great hardware, bandwidth and control panel.

I have to check out Softlayer since there are so many good reviews in these forums about them. Where are their datacenters located? I've found that Texas usually gives me the best results from west and east coasts.

for softlayer, is the $159/mo starter plan a good option?

any upgrades (h/w or s/w) to suggest?

I'd suggest a memory upgrade to 2GB min and raid 1 SCSI drives.

That's just my opinion.

I host with OrangeFiber.com / AlphaRed. I'm paying $109/mo for 10mbps unmetered bandwidth. My site doesn't require much horsepower, though, just bandwidth galore so I went with a low-specs server. I've been with them since November 2006 and have had zero downtime or other problems. My server is unmanaged, but I'm sure they have managed solutions as well.

The pricing you see listed on the web site isn't spectacular, but I emailed their Sales group with the specs I wanted and they put together a sweet deal... They're pricing a deal on a second server for me, so we'll see what they come up with.

I'd recommend LayeredTech.com - i have a server with them, and i've had 100% uptime since i've had it - which is about 6 months now.

I recommend Softlayer as well. If anyone has any specific questions, please feel free to ask -- my company has been using them for a while.

can softlayer set up a server for me with a user cp similar to bluehost's?

i need php/mysql/phpmyadmin/email.

will they negotiate on price? they appear to be at the high end of the price spectrum for dfs.

miller2348
March 24th, 2007, 10:08 AM
Yeah, you're probably using cpanel at bluehost and you can have that installed on your server at softlayter for 25 a month i think.

You're best off hiring a management company to set everything up and manage the server.

They are on a higher end but you do get what you pay for. Their network is great and very solid.

www.misdvision.com has been very good to me and has helped me on issues that most other hosting companies would have charged for administration time. give them a A+

I am using www.wiredtree.com , they are based in chicago so you dont have to worry about hurricanes and earthquakes too much.

both sites in my sig are hosted on the dedicated. speed seems to be excellent for me anyway.

Also should mention setup was so easy my 4 year old daughter could do it and they are completely managed.

Use softlayer, they are excellent and you can go through server4sale and you get a better spec box and better value.

My advice is to stay away from ThePlanet.com they over charge. If you want bandwidth upgrades, you have to wait until the next month to upgrade. They are very pricey.:s

That's interesting. Texas is where hostgator's servers are too, and they're a top tier hosting company as well. What if there was something about Texas....some magic key.

In terms of Latency Texas is usually the most central place where you can ping about 45-50 ms from New York and from California. That's why most gamers have to play on Texas servers for multiplayer games.

Also if you want catch a great deal you can get a free 2gb ram and 250gb hd upgrade from softlayer with the code "THY" on quad core xeons. So basically you multi core xeon with 4gb ram and 500 gb hd for 212 a month.
