View Full Version : New Forum Design

Although you'll find that it's not complete, I've gotten to a launching point with the new forum design.
I originally had CPR design a new forum skin but am going to use it for another site instead. I purchased a skin called greenfox from vbstyles (the people that run the site are great. If you need a vb skin, they're a good place to start), but the whole dark grey and lime green was nowhere near what I was after.
After a couple days of taking design elements from both I landed on what you see before you.
Please report any bugs (All the images will take a little while to replace as it's a tedious job to create them all) here and your comments and suggestions are welcome.
Cheers.

Looks good, maybe the fonts need some upping though?
Also http://www.myspacepros.com/forum/greenfox/images/reputation/reputation_pos.gif doesn't really suit with the other shade of green around it.

I like it. Just one thing is missing or just not visible enough, a 'New Posts' button on the top menu. There's a 'Today's posts' button under a submenu, but I'm not sure if that's the same thing, either way, it's the first button I click when I come to the board and that's probably the same for others, making it more accessable would be cool.
Dunno if I like the shadow under the logo, that's just personal tatse though! Is there a dark glow coming from the top edge of the replies? Not sure I like that if there is.
The menu at the top is really nice, the mouse overs look really good.
Edit: Maybe the option to increase fontsize would be nice, I use a pretty high screen resolution on a widescreen, it's not quite as comfortable reading the smaller text as it was the large.
Edit again: I remembered I can increase it on my browsers, but would be nice if it happened only for this forum and was auto-set each time instead of having to adjust it manually.

I like it. Although I liked the old version as well, this one is much easier to see new replies to topics which makes catching up easier.

New posts button would definitely be helpful
and a heavier line to seperate the signature from the post

Just realized my font size had been increased so I didn't realize how small the fonts were. They should be back to a normal size now.

I feel stupid now LOL!
I didn't even know the "New Posts" button existed in the first place...I just press "QuickLinks" > "Todays Posts" which does the same kinda thing doesn't it? =/

I need my new posts button.
But I will be ok until then.
I really like this. I got on at school and at first kinda thought it was just the computer effing up on me and showing me a different style, but this one is very clean and neat. i like it.

Here's a work around until Greg gets the New Post's button fixed.
Click on this link:
http://www.myspacepros.com/forum/search.php?searchid=46350
Then bookmark it in an easy to get to spot.
Then simply click on the bookmark to see the new posts and again after you have finished reading a post, the remaining new posts will appear. Not as good as the New Posts link but better than nothing.

Greg,
It looks much better now than earlier with that "menu" on the left gone :)
I do wonder:
1) It appears you've set all usernames to be displayed in lowecase instead of their 'natural' format - with 'text-transform:lowecase' - was this intentional or not?
.bigusername { color:#01428D !important; font-family:"Trebuchet MS"; text-transform:lowercase; font-size: 12.5pt; font-weight:normal }
2) I still think you should add a "Location" field under our usernames to go along our join date / posts, so we know where each other live :)

The text-transofrm was intentional, yes. But it's only like that while I'm developing as it's easier for the way I test to see changes that way.
I'll add that location as well :)

Not sure what kind of control there is over it or if it is just a replace of an image or what but maybe a stronger separation of the sig and post would be good. Right now, with people that have normal text in their sig, it just looks like part of the post. Not a big deal but could be confusing to newer people who don't realize it's sig text...

Excellent! I really like the way you have implemented the hyperlinks (http://#) - looks good.
Did I mention invisible hyperlinks are one of my pet hates?

It will probably take some time to integrate the New Posts button considering greg is very busy with the release of msls, fixing updates, maintaining websites, ect., ect., ect., it may seem like an easy task but really may take some time. So please just be patient.

Greg, what add in are you using to make your messages a different color? I'd like to add that functionality to my forum.

No addon, I made the change in the templates. You'll need to go into your postbit template and find where the message td and the td below it (in my case, both are alt) and put a condition in to check to see if the post was written by a specific user or usergroup. If you would like example code give me PM and I'll help get you going.
Cheers.

On the one hand I think it looks gay but on the other, I like the concept - a lot.
Maybe it just needs time to get used to?
Can you PM me with the sample code?! Cheers! :P
