View Full Version : Viral Linkbacks Layouts 2.0

The main thing stopping everyone it seems from fully supporting this 2.0 profile on myspace is the simple fact that linkbacks/cornertags do not seem possible.
So far it seems the only way is too:
Contain CSS commenting in your code. For example
/* LAYOUT DESIGNED BY WEBSITE.COM */
This can be scattered throughout your code.
What are some more things we can do?

custom css is stored on an external stylesheet - <link rel="stylesheet" type="text/css" href="/Modules/PageEditor/Handlers/ProfileCss.ashx?userId=friendid" title="UserStyle" />
so any linkbacks would have to go in the html section or about me

position:absolute; works in the about me section.
Therefore corner tags can be still had, but it's just the process of getting the user to insert the link tags in the about me section aswell as installing the CSS{} in the page editor.

What I can suggest is "auto-injectors" for the layout codes, that will inject the profile linkback into about me, and the CSS into the CSS{} section of profile 2.0
Maybe this can be done with gigya?

Lorny has it figured out. :) Lorny is me.
People will definitely steal my wonderful idea, but IDC. *cries*

It has two involve copying and pasting twice though. There's no other way.
So what makes it a wonderful idea?

LOL narh I was being a bit sarcastic.
I didn't bother with a link back at all. :p
I just put a credit banner saying "Go to BurningViolet.com for layouts" or something like that.

Ideally the best option is that no-one supports 2.0 layouts so the format dies. With no back link it will make layouts almost worthless unless you rank on Google.
Obviously though as some people are supporting them, we all have to. It might give you a small traffic boost right now but in a month or so as your corner tags and link backs fade from MySpace profiles you'll see a far greater drop in traffic than you did rise.
Edit: As someone mentioned, if gigya can auto post in the about me section as well as CSS box, then it wouldn't be so bad, but would 100% of users use gigya over normal install...

yeah i think its best not to support it...
i asked ppl if they like it and almost everyone said they hated, some were mad because the stuff they had on their profile dissapeared lol
and others asked me how to go back to 1.0 instead

We should make a thread and all make banners to say "Switch back to Profile 1.0" on our sites. That would be a good collective efforts if people were up to it.

yeah but i doubt ppl would do that, in fact ppl r starting to make 2.0 layouts instead, which is really dumb.... if ppl actually start to like them & then its becomes popular our traffic will drop eventually, it might be good now but on the long run it wont..

Completely agree. The more people that would be willing to say Switch back to Profile 1.0 the better. Maybe we should make a thread and someone should try to "lead" the idea? I would offer to do it but I'm busy as is and I wouldn't want to take charge of something I don't have time to follow up with.

i think people are only switching back because theres not to many "good" profile 2.0 layouts like some sites have them but there not that good :/
i actually like it, even more because the code is really easy after playing with it.
but yah the credit is a problem but there will be a way im sure.

just put a link to the css part and say that's part one of the layout
copy/paste code
then put a link to about me and say that's part two of the layout
copy/paste code
*if you don't put in both sections, your layout will not work right!*
lol

Hi,
At Gigya we just launched a patch to support that:
1. Wildfire (Gigya's posting tool) automatically detects whether the user uses profile 2.0 or 1.0 and posts the content to the relevant section.
So, if it's v1.0 profile the layout goes to the good old "about me" section.
if it's a v2.0 profile the process of posting to the v2.0 profile looks like this:
A. switch the user to "no theme" (to avoid running over MS new layout theme, otherwise your layout won't work)
B. adding the CSS content (note that the content you provide us must be a v2.0 compatible layout)
C. publish
2. Also, we added another important functionality - supporting backlinks from the "about me" section.
this way you can have a profile 2.0 layout posted to the CSS section of the new profile and also post a backlink into the "about me" section, so Gigya is actually performing a "double" post, in terms of auto-inserting content into those two places in one post.
to use that:
1. Place linkback content in css, surrounded by "/*BEGIN_ABOUT_CONTENT" and "END_ABOUT_CONTENT*/"
2. To position the content outside the about box, use the "class" attribute (referencing a class in the css) instead of a "style" attribute.
For further questions, please contact our support team.

I tried this but i can't get it to work. Maybe i'm doing it wrong can someone help me?

I am failing miserably also. How do you get gigya to do the auto post to myspace without showing the users the "code box." Whenever I click on the Myspace Icon is just shows me the "code"

You have to be using the Gigya auto-post mechanism instead of MySpace's. So, be sure you have the useMyspaceAPI parameter set to 'false'. The Wildfire configuration code should look similar to this:
var pconf={
useMyspaceAPI: 'false',
...
};

Well, it does suck. But you can always have a banner under the navbar which you put in the css part. Yes.. its unclickable, but if people can see it, they can easily type in the url if they want a layout! xD
Here is what I mean.
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=272336616
See it says "vintaged.org made the layout!"?
It works. It doesnt alter when you resize the page either. Yes, my banner is transparent, but even without a transparent banner you dont get nasty bits sticking out the side. :)
Heres the code if you want it:
div.contentTop {
background-image:url(BANNER URL HERE);
padding-top:13px (replace with the height of your banner);
background-repeat:no-repeat;
background-position:top left;
}
Hope this helps. :)
