I've been trying to spend $XXX on GAF for 3 months. I want XX links of X PR for a site of mine. The first guy accepts all of my requirements and then proceeds to do his own thing. 100 directory submissions later I tell the guy he is crazy if he thought he would get $XXX for 100 directory submissions. Argh. cancel escrow start over. 2 weeks later the next guy promises the world and complains that I'm not serious because it took 2 hrs to respond to a question. I award the job and then get nothing but excuses for 3 weeks why he hasn't started. Argh. cancel escrow start over. I just posted the job for the 3rd and final time.
Has anyone else found GAF to be a huge waste of time? I could have gotten my XX links in the time I waste PM'n these ppl trying to get the work done or my money back.

A bit off topic ....I use a service over at DP from Dotcompals. For $20/month he submits your site to all the new directories with diff anchors and descrips.
Very good service.I know directory links aren't what they were but hey.....a link is a link. Also supplies a spreadsheet with submisssions and I get lots of emails every day from the dirs submitted to.Over 150 so far this month alone.

Why do people even submit to directories? Seems like a total waste of time

I agree with fryman.. You can get the same traffic from regular text links than you can from directories.

Directories aren't really for traffic, they are a cheap way to boost your SERPs for a particular keyword phrase. And when you can buy 200 submissions on DP for $10 that doesn't hurt. On getafreelancer, I'm not looking for submissions. I'm looking for quality backlinks from real sites.

Hmm.... you get listed on a page with 50 other links... I don't see how that could boost your serps at all
Directories are a myth. The only one worth submitting to is DMOZ and maybe a few other big ones like business.com or yahoo, but those miracle packs of 500 submissions for 5 bucks won't help.
