View Full Version : NEW! MSLS Layout Information

Welcome,

A new product is on the horizon known as MySpace Layout Script or simply MSLS. Layouts in MSLS are no longer stored the way MSRS are, but we did include the feature to import MSRS layouts into MSLS.

Importing from MSRS to MSLS:
The current MSRS structure will work just fine for importing. Any unused files are discarded and if files the script now handles do not exist they are simply ignored.

There is no longer a need for the preview.php page that the preview mod for MSRS made popular as the script supports a much more advanced preview method now.

Image Formats: MSRS is currently limited to .jpg image types however when importing MSRS layouts to MSLS, MSLS will recognize .jpg, .png and .gif for all layout images.

Images: Although MSRS utilizes only a thumb.jpg and bg.jpg, You can import thumb.extension, contact.extension, network.extension and of course bg.extension.

CSS:You do not need to include the image paths for any of the images used in the layout in the css. You may however include style and positioning css in the layouts though. MSLS will take care of the rest.

Importing and exporting MSLS layouts:

As mentioned before, MSLS has it's own layout structure. Once MSRS layouts are imported they can be exported as MSLS layouts and distributed making it much easier for you to distribute your MSLS compatable layouts.

The script has not been released yet but it has been completed. I wanted to give everyone a day or so head start on getting their layouts ready if they included images that are not currently supported by MSRS.

Cheers.

Nice to hear that its done Greg.

Any hints on the pricerange so i can earn up some extra bucks to buy it?? And this will of course be on a one liscense per domain basis as MSRS is correct?

This is just a post to notify designers so they also can prepare for the launch. I'll release more information on the product when it is released.

But for sneak peaks.... If you don't tell anyone ;) demo1 (http://buildrevenues.com/msls/demo1/) and demo2 (http://buildrevenues.com/msls/demo2/) - demo3 will go up sometime tomorrow. I'll still be adjusting all 3 layouts though, so nothing is set in stone. All 3 themes will come with the script though.

Eh just one small error i found, maybe you have a few bugs to work out or something, idk but if you click to preview the layout, and you enter like something other than a friend id, it doesn't let you enter it again for any other layout, just says invalid friend id, and won't let you enter it again no matter what.

i didn't know what to put in the "submit query" form so i just typed "yeah" and obviously that wasn't it HAHA.

MSRS only supports .jpg
the new MSLS, which is the script he is describing, which isn't a full myspace resource script, simple a layout script, will support .png, .jpg, and .gif...

lol. im totally in. its probably brilliantly written, and will probably do so well.

I think that MSRS is going to be called RS.. This is because it will have a wide range of compatibility. So you can have a site with Bebo, Friendster, Everyone's Space, ect. codes and layouts.

Dont take my word though.. Feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

It will be an improvement on what you have, sure. But wouldn't you prefer to take a leap forward, not just a step? It's still quite behind what is possible.

silentsummit

It may be behind.. But there will be updates. Most things dont come out perfect in the first release.

Greg-J
January 24th, 2007, 05:03 PM
@DavidR,
As a general rule, don't insult the forum owner;) More so when that individual is closer to the source and more connected with the other individuals who have their finger on the pulse of this niche than quite possibly anyone else.

Making an early opinion to the nature of the product is somewhat ignorant considering nobody but myself and Des have any idea how the script works or what its limitations are. It's easy to make assumptions to how it operates, but it's all speculation until it's released.

MSLS is not trying to be the successor to MSRS but rather a companion to MSRS or any other myspace resource site out there. In my experience running resource sites I have found that a profound majority of my users go straight for layouts. My search engine traffic is is dominated by searches for layouts. Much more than any other search terms. The problem with this is that I get nothing but myspace ads giving me 3 cent clicks. By removing the general myspace content structure and adding in titles and description content that relates to other things I am turning my 3 cent clicks into 30 cent clicks.

An example is this:
A visitor to my site that searched for Star Wars Layouts (you would be surprised at how many searches I get for that term) aren't just interested in myspace layouts, they're also interested in Star Wars. The problem is that my resource site is so plastered with myspace terms that Google throws myspace ads at it without prejudice. Remove the myspace references and add in contextually relevant information to your Star Wars layouts in the form of a title and a description and you give Google something to provide ads for. Star Wars related ads pay a hell of a lot more than myspace related ads. The same holds true for any number of subjects or layout categories.

It's actually startling how someone can't see the value in that. I don't just spit out scripts I think will bank a few bucks. This was given a tremendous amount of forethought before the product ever hit the drawing board. When the webmasters here that are hitting in the 6 digits of uniques a day are telling me it's brilliant in private, I'm going to have to question any assertion to the contrary.

By stating that this product is simply a step forward rather than a leap you are operating under the assumption that you know what the product is striving to be and this is obviously not the case. It is not nor does it try to be a replacement for any script that exists including MSRS. To presume it can be more than it is without actually seeing what that amounts to? I'm confused at best if not outright insulted.

As a general rule, don't insult the forum owner;)

Haha that was my first thought when I read this.... I didn't post here because I wanted to avoid the wrath. Greg is all powerful and knowing.

My thought is I can't wait till I get enough layouts to buy this and then I love your layout but users generally like to stay on one site style when their browseing and it freaks them out if they change sites while browsing. So I want to buy it and tear it apart and implement it to my MSRS site. Unless SOMEONE was extremely generous and made a version that could easily addon to MSRS................

All I ask for is a simple way to batch upload layouts. Right now it is a pain... creating folders, putting index files in them, creating thumbnails... do that many times and you go crazy.

Greg-J
January 24th, 2007, 08:02 PM
Thank all of you for your encouragement, it is much appreciated.

In response to integration with MSRS. I am currently working to complete the 3rd template and after that I will then work on a template to seamlessly integrate it into MSRS and if all is well it will keep your current directory structure intact so no lost back links.

Fryman, I'm with you. converting from MSRS to MSLS is as seamless as possible and works wonderfully. In fact, if the layout contains a thumb it will use that for the thumbnail generation. If not, it will use the bg image so there's not a need for a thumb anymore.

Des completed our store this evening so now the only thing delaying release is completion of the 3rd layout. You can see it get completed in realtime as I work on it an demo3 (http://buildrevenues.com/msls/demo3).

Cheers.

I would agree with you Greg as others should not mock something until they actually TRY IT. I am sure everyone remembers when they were young and when asked to try a new food and they would say "I dont like it" and what is every parents response "How do you know you don't like it unless you TRY IT"........I personally think that goes for anything

Now I just need to get the money for this new script......come on tax returns lol

Can't wait like usual lol.

heheh. You know how some banks have that "xmas account" thing where they automatically take like $50 from your checking and slip it into a special savings account so you have a chunk of money around xmas time? I need one of those for Gregs stuff lol. Maybe I can add that on to my hosting somehow? lol.

After reading the first post the one thing that came to mind is it's really time for a great layout designer. Would be awesome if you could take that one layout designer that was included as a bonus with MSRS and improve upon it to make it the ultimate layout designer and have that as part of MSLS. Would go perfect with it and make it that much more impressive ;).

I hate it when you do this ... 'script nearly ready, blah, blah' and I wait semi-patiently for a week or two and then it's 'almost ready' and then it's 'fixing a few bugs' and then it's 'need to try it out' and, and, and ... just gimme it. I WANT IT NOW!

I like the 3rd demo layout, btw.

Hey Greg I use hostdepartment.com for my sites. They have both Windows and Unix servers and from what I can tell have pretty much everything enabled so you might want to give them a try. Sorry I have a Unix server (windows is junk) but you can get an account there for like $10 and you can just pay monthy through PayPal so you could get a windows server pay your one month and if they dont have what you need you only lost $10

Greg-J
January 30th, 2007, 03:20 PM
This moment we're still waiting on a final DNS to kick in for godaddy and dreamhost which we fully expected to be done by now. We've installed and tested all 3 templates and all the options on both our own dedicated server as well as on hostgator but considering how many people have shared hosting we're not releasing it until we've tested it on at least those three as most shared hosting companies have some pretty interesting ways of returning paths.

If DNS doesn't happen today it won't be released today. I know a lot of you want it NOW, but it's more important to me to know that when it is released I can breathe a sigh of relief knowing it'll be smooth sailing.

If anyone has a test domain we can use on either godaddy or dreamhost give me a PM and it'll speed up release.

Greg-J

Our DNS finally went through for GoDaddy and it's a good thing we waited to release as GoDaddy does some pretty funky things with our paths so we're working on making it compatible now.

So much for releasing this morning.... (this is why I don't like release dates)

vulcanstudios
January 30th, 2007, 06:17 PM

is there any way you can make the script to pull up pictures from photobucket so it doesn't load to heavy on the server?

vulcanstudios
January 30th, 2007, 10:17 PM
Well a way you could do this is to change all the variables that detect the current folder for images and change it so that it somehow points to the photobucket album where it pulls the images from. A lot more complicated than that but if I get my hands on it (which money wise isn't very soon) then I'll start releasing plugins for it like I've started doing for the MSRS script.

@ifreemyspacelayout @vulcanstudios,
This feature was one of the very first implemented. It's much more advanced than simply loading a picture from a remote location though. I think you'll all be presently surprised.

We've solved the issues related to how shared hosts deal with global paths and implementing the change as I type.

vulcanstudios
January 30th, 2007, 11:14 PM
YEA!!!! I still can't wait to mod the balls out of, for some reason I always find the things I don't like and have to mess with em. For instance did you get this MSRS integradable? If it's not no worries... I'll shread it anyways and make it work

Greg-J
January 30th, 2007, 11:19 PM
The url structure is such that you could install the script into your MSLS Layouts folder (replacing the MSRS layout module with MSLS) and all your urls would remain intact once you used the MSRS Import option in the admin panel, yes. The script can also be installed in any directory, sub directory, sub domain etc...

I haven't done a theme for it that mimics the look of MSRS - mostly because I'm sick of looking at that layout... It will be something I work on in the next couple weeks though, so seamless MSRS integration isn't far off at all for those who don't want to theme the scrip themselves.

Are you going to include some?If so will they be the same ones you used to test on my host?
If not I will delete them

I do not own the rights to those layouts, just used them for testing.

I'll create my own sample ones. I don't want to include too many though. I included the Star Wars ones with MSRS and now EVERYONE has them . . .

Greg-J

@kh1,

You can use the MSRS Layout structure as it imports MSRS Layouts. The actual layout.dat structure is an associative array so the only way to really "create" layouts in MSLS format is to create them in MSLS by creating a new layout from the admin panel or importing MSRS layouts.

Kyle

So am I screwed if I don't have MSRS in the first place?

Not that they aren't good, I just wanted my layouts to be unique.

Well now that MSLS is released, now to buy one of those 3 domains i thought of...and gather up enough cash to purchase it :D

This is for a single domain installation? if we have multiple domains on a box can we point them all to it?

doh.. didn't get to the eula yet.. I see it now..

though on the user cp..

Expires: Never
Hostname: Any
IP: Any
Install Limit: Unlimited

unlimited installs?

The store is still under going changes.

But it is one install, on one domain. Once you install it, the hostname will change to where you installed it to, and wont work anywhere else, unless Greg or myslef change it for you. The license however, does not ever expire.

Not at all. It's a simple php setting that every host we have used allows you to set if it's not set already. It will be in the installation instructions as well.

If this script is tied to a specific webhost then we can never sell the site to anyone else cause once they try to move the domain to their host the site will stop working.......

He says its possible for him or Greg to change it. So in the event you sell the site to someone else, then just have greg or Des change the hostname...no biggie, if i'm correct

I believe you can 'transfer' the license if it's anything like MSRS was. There were some rules to it however, I think.

minnseoelite
January 31st, 2007, 10:28 PM
Yea I know Greg or Rob could change it it just makes more unneeded hassle to sell your site. Greg since the hostname can only be changed by you guys does that mean the script validates the host its running on by continuously checking back with your servers.......hope not as this will double the sites chances of having downtime :(

Not trying to be rude or anything I just want to get all the info I need before deciding to purchase or not.

Des
January 31st, 2007, 10:47 PM
@minnseoelite
I'm not sure where you get your information from, but I would be interested to know what your figures are based on. We do allow license transfers, in fact it is in the eula. We do periodical checks on the domain, not all the time. We spent a great deal of time deciding on when to do the check, and how often because of the potential for an issue.

If you already own a license, but do not have access to the owner forums, login to the store, then in the top right there will be a link to your account page. Add your MySpacePro's user name and password, save. After you save you should see your id number. Then click the synchronize button at the bottom. You will have access to the owners forums.

Hey,

So happy I won this script :D

Thought i'd post my MSLS which im currently working on to show how easy it is to modify. Compared to MSRS which I thought was easy this is a piece of cake.

Already, if you see what ive currently done it took me literally 15 minutes (not including designing the logo etc.) to do what ive done. Not a huge difference yet but working on it.

LayoutCow (MSLS) (http://www.layoutcow.com)

Im going to work on combining parts of the other templates into this template and also work on further design changes :)

Thanks,
Dean

this looks interesting. I have a few questions first

1.For the categories can they be alphabetical order?
2.For the ads if I use different formats will the table stretch to fit it?
3.How did it work on shared hosting?
4.I read that it now automatilly creates thumbnails but not screenshots right? in the portal demo it had the screenshots did you just put those for example purposes?
5.In the portal theme I didnt see a # option for like bands or artist that begin with numbers and not letters
6.Can I change the amount of layouts per page?
7.Can I change from lets say top 20 layouts to top 10 layouts?

In the future will you allow people to maybe create their own themes so it can be totally unique

The demo site is up there is also 2 other demo sites displaying the other stock templates.

@mixi
1.Categories are displayed by weight that is set in the admin panel
2.I am not 100% sure because I didnt not style those, Greg will have a definate answer on this though.
3.It works fine on shared hosting
4.You can set the thumbnail in the admin panel, or when importing layouts. IF no thumbnail is provided it defaults to the background image.
5.No there is no number search by default, but this can be added easily.
6.Yes this is a setting the admin options.
7. Yes very easily

It already runs off a template system, so you can create your own themes.
