Ok, so here is the problem. Two days ago comcast internet went out due to a bad storm in my area. The next morning I called to check on it and they said it was working fine, but I was still not able to conect to the internet. The lady made me check my ip address and it was 169.something when its really supposed to be like 89.something. So she tells me there is nothing she can do, to go buy a new cord and it should work. Well I get a new cord and it still doesn't work on my desktop, while it does work on my sister-in-law's laptop/which I am on right now/. So it must have something to do with my ip address right? I tried ipconfig /renew and it gives me an error message. Does anyone know how to fix this? I would appreciate the help!

To set your Windows XP computer to use DHCP, please follow the instructions outlined below.

1. Close all applications
2. Click Start and select Control Panel
3. Click Network and Internet Connections
4. Click Network Connections
5. Double-click the Local Area Connection Icon
6. The Local Area Connection Status window will appear
7. Click on Properties
8. On the General Tab, double-click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) or highlight it and select Properties
9. Select the General Tab of the Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) Properties window
10. Make sure the radio buttons for Obtain an IP Address Automatically and Obtain DNS Server Address Automatically are both selected and click OK
11. Click OK to close the Local Area Connection Properties window
12. Click Close to close the Local Area Connection Status window
13. Your PC is now configured to use DHCP. Try opening your web browser to confirm that you're able to surf.

Have you tried doing that? ^

Renew Your IP Address

It sometimes becomes necessary to manually renew your IP address. If you suddenly realize you do not have an Internet connection, you can often simply right-click the computer icon in the task bar near the clock of your XP desktop (If this icon is present). This will go through a process of resetting your IP address.
But if you do not have this option, you can go to START>RUN and type cmd. At the command line type ipconfig /release (or winipcfg /release in earlier versions of Windows). Then hit ENTER. Next, type ipconfig /renew and you should get a new IP address from the router.

If you have a cable modem, you may want to also renew its IP address. First, go ahead and release the IP address on the PC, then shut the computer down. Next, unplug the cable modem for a couple of minutes, then plug it back in again. Once all of the modem lights are green, power up the PC again. It should automatically renew its IP at boot.

Note: If you have a router, you'll want to unplug it, as well, then plug it back in AFTER you plug in the modem, but before you power up the PC. The router will need to supply the PC with a new IP address.

Try right clicking on the connection icon on your taskbar and goto repair or try start>run type cmd and then do ipconfig /flushdns

Joey, I did what you said and it says my DHCP or whatever is running fine, but when I do the ipconfig/renew it says it cant connect to the dhcp thingy. I am so about to take my computer out back for target practice:censored:

I'd try the other things other people have suggested to... I really don't know anything about how comcast works, but did they install, or put into a disk to your computer when they first set it up? I use timewarner cable, and although my connection dies at times, they never give me any bs about sending somebody out to look at it.

It sucks when I lose my connection cause its tied into my phone line.

Hahaha, man comcrap is annoying sometimes. Uninstall your network card and restart your computer. It should force a reinstall and you should be able to connect to the internet.

i honestly think you shuld call up comcast or whatever your net is through and they have to know what the hell your suppose to do step by step. I asked sean and he had the same problem with his they had to give him another ip address.
