try bluehost if your site doesn't do more than 10k uniques per day

Don't buy a domain from a host, some hosts end up using the company's information as the domain name owner instead of your information, making it harder to prove the domain is yours if you ever need to.

www.name.com is much better & cheaper, just $5.99 for a 1 year domain registration and a DNS change takes just 1/3 hour! (;

Godaddy for domains, I've used them almost a year now for hosting and domains and never had no problems. Plus I get $1.99 domains with every non-domain purchase. So if you plan to buy hosting with them, buy it first and you should get the option to get the domain name for $1.99 (Y)
As for you domain name, I'd pick something that going to be better in SEO if I was you. Having a word in that is used a lot in search terms will help get more traffic to your site in the long run.

It says:
Registered through: GoDaddy.com, Inc. (http://www.godaddy.com)
Is this the same free private whois service the poster above ^ was talking about, or is this one that you've paid for from godaddy? confused is all :s

It's the same. Private Registration is private registration, You can either see someone's personal information when you search them or you can't :P

Free "whois guard" at namecheap is the same privacy you pay at other registars to keep your adminstrative details private.
Except for yahoo whois privacy, it's not really private.
oh and btw whois renewal at namecheap is less than $3
Other registars they charge you $9

The reason I asked is somebody (can't remember who) posted here something about their domain being private, and I pointed out to them that only their name was hidden, but their addresses & home phone number was still available for the world to see. But I also don't know what service that person had paid for or to whom.

thanks to everybody that helped! i have one more question though, What would some good names be for SEO? Smurfwicked said that the name i chose wouldnt get me as much traffic in the long run, and its supposed to be a resource site, mostly design resources.

Don't think that the name is going to guarantee you anything but it does help. Think of what you're going to target the most and try to find a domain name that will match what people will likely be searching to find your site.
For example : lets say I want people to find my site that is looking for girl layouts so I get a domain thats girllayouts.com or girl-layouts.com, search engines will automatically give some relevance to your site because of the domain name being so similar to the search term. However, in a competitive market such as myspace you'll be far from the top to begin with.
Also you might want to look into whats popular searched now. I wish I would of taken the time because like many others I just jumped the gun in a hurry to start a myspace site. I now have learned many things that I should have done and am kind enough to share my opinions on that (Y)
http://www.google.com/trends <- that might help you finding out whats popular.
