My website receives about 18,000 uniques daily. I am looking for a dedicated server that could handle this traffic with hardly any downtime.

I was thinking about 2 servers
with a private rack or virtual rack , load balancer etc.
perhaps about 10k, 12k or 15k bandwidth monthly

Who do you guys suggest as the best company.

I recommend SoftLayer.com or ThePlanet.com

They are simply the best hosting companies around at the moment.

I keep all my high traffic sites and CoLo with SoftLayer and never had any problems at all.

Customer support is excellent and prices are good for what you get.

I'd speak to the online advisor at SoftLayer and tell them what you're requirements are and they will point you in the right direction.

The great thing about them is they will not tell you to pick the most expensive package available. They will pick a package that suits you're needs.

Thank you Mr King.

Your response is appreciated. I currently host with ThePlanet and Love the heck out the company Ive never had to self reboot my server and thats a plus always.

I was just wondering if there is another company around that is better and offer more.

I contact softlayer, their customer service was not so great when it comes to giving quotes at the least. 5 dedicated servers on private rack with them would cost me just a tab over $800

I get the same server with the planet for less than $600 on a private rack with only 2 servers.

I am looking to upgrade... was just wondering if there something better that other larger resource sites use.

Can't theplanet offer you a better load balancing package? and I'm surprised at SL. They are usually very good.

How about Rackspace.com

Tried them?

I never heard of rackspace but I will go to their site now... The planet did over me another package but I was just still wonder if any other larger sites use anyone other than the planet that may be better. If I cant find another company within the next week i will just accept the package deal to add a additional server.

What are you running that needs so many servers and a load balancer? I have a resource site on an itty bitty 50$ a month server and it gets 15,000 UVs per day without even flinching...

I agree with Pooraffiliate you definitely don't need more than one server. Softlayer is not bad, although they have had a lot of problems with power in the past year, and here recently.

I don't think a resource site would is really considered mission critical enough to require rackspace, and they are VERY overpriced. They are only really good if you want that type of support.

Do you currently have a dedicated server? You may want to check and see what the current bottleneck is.

Interesting you mention about SoftLayer. I have a site that attracts around 40k UV's per month and it's never been down due to "power" outages.

In fact, it's never been down in the past 4 years with SL.

I'll have to keep an eye on that. =]

I'm with Gnax and they're pretty good to me most of the time. The also have a line of unmanaged servers, which might be more affordable for someones pocket. But you'll need to know how to install cpanel, apache, etc

I definitely think Softlayer is one of the best hosts out there. You can get a nice server for around 200/mo
