I just learned this a while ago... XD
For Photoshop users only...
1. Open your image in Photoshop...I'll use this:

2. Create a new layer...

3. Click on the "LAYER 2" and fill it with any color...I chose pink
4. So Ashley's picture turned pink allover...So overlay a gradient...

5. It's already fading but Ashley's picture is not visible...go to your layers panel...match it to mine:

YOU CAN ALSO USE IT ON TEXTS but you don't have to create a new layer...when you put a gradient overlay, set the blend mode to "soft light".
