yeah your layout catches there attention, basically helps them decide if they want to look around, if your layout is good, there reaction is your content will be too, but once they browse around its the content you have that will keep them visiting.

layout gives them an initial first impression, as others have said.
its important i think to have a unique site layout though so people semi-remember it.

but content is what definitely matters most of all because i mean you'll still get ad revenue, but you won't get people using it and referring others to it with their link backs.
