Say if I had 30 link exchanges;
Would it generatate more hits to use just the one anchor text phrase?
Or would it generatate more hits to use 5 different anchor texts, linked on 6 sites each?

I know my site would probably rank higher for a particular phrase if it was the same on all 30 sites, but would it be better hit-wise (and harder?) to try and rank higher for 5 different anchor texts?

:/ I would just try my best to get on front page for ONE before I went after another =p I dont think 6 links will get you very far you know?

But if they were like not-so competitive phrases, would it work better then?

Eg: Cute Comment Boxes, Pink MySpace Layouts, things like that.

I usually go 80/20 with my anchor text. 80% of my anchors target my main keyword and the other 20% target other keywords and add some diversity to look more natural. then once i get my ranking for my main keyword where i want it i do the same with the next one i want to rank for

I usually mix them up 75 / 25 ish. You want it too look as natural as possible, and that being said, 500 links with "Myspace Layouts" does not look natural. I personally use links with my targeted word, some links with filler words (free, get etc) and other links with just my domain name.

ex...
My keyword is Myspace Layouts for example..

if im buying 10 links, I would organize my anchors as such...
6 of them will be for my keyword "Myspace Layouts"
The rest would be a variation of "get myspace layouts here", "free hot myspace layouts", "http://www.mydomain.com", and maybe a "myspace profile layouts"

By adding long tailed anchors, you not only look more natural, but you give your site the advantage of having the words such as "free" and "profile" in your inbound text. The word "profile" is directly related to myspace and myspace is related to your site. Therefore, by using the keyword "myspace profile layouts", you would benefit on searches for "myspace layouts", "profile layouts" and "myspace profile layouts". Combine this with your current links already pointing at your site, maybe these links being about "myspace graphics", and you now have some authority on keywords like "myspace profile graphics". Each word in your anchor will persuade Google to beleive thats what your site is about. Dont be afraid of long tail words either, they are traffic drivers!

Seo is very hard, you need to keep on building backlinks. Once my site is on the front page, i will try with another keywords.

The best is to try by youself, and see what is the best.
Of course if you focus on one keyword it is easier to get ranked good for that keyword.
But, another thing, it that if all websites use same anchor and url to your website, it will be suspicious, and it is not like natural link.

My advice is to spread, like some other people suggested 70/30, and also link to different pages of your website. And mix your main keywords, for example:
Cute MySpace Layouts
Cute Layouts for Myspace
Myspace Cute Layouts
All those words contain same keywprds, but different order, so it will look more natural.

Hmm, interesting posts here. Everyone seems to stress targeting your primary keyword but just changing a word or two here or there to make it look natural. However, most websites get 75% or more of their traffic from long tail keywords. These are less competitive keywords that most people completely ignore because they are trying to rank #1 for the "BIG ONE". Despite this belief, the number of less searched keywords when combined can bring much much more traffic than 5 or even 10 of the top searched keywords for any niche.

that is true what you say. ranking well for a couple hundred long tail keywords could be worth more your time than putting all your efforts at one keyword. although, a lot of the time you can rank pretty with for the long tail stuff, from just on page seo.. so i would just dedicate a portion of my strat on the long-tail and larger work on the bigger keyword.
