you lasso around the where you want it to fade, set the feathering to 40px and keep pressing delete until it fades.

In Photoshop there's a gradient that's half transparent, select it, set your foreground color to white, then drag the gradient up on a new layer or on the main picture. :)

you can either use a layer mask or regular mask to do this.
ok, incase you need visuals :)
1 - Ok go to the layer of the image or whatever you want to fade
2 - select the layer mask icon on the layer palette: *visual*

3 - after you click that you get a swatch thingy on your layer showing that layer mask has been activated, make sure that little thing is selected *visual*

4 - Now, In layer mask mode, white means show and black means hide, anything that fades from white to black will be fading from visable to transparent. Make sure you have black and white as your two colors and go up to the gradient and select the basic black to white gradient. Then simply drag the gradient to get your desired fading effect. you may have to try a few times to get it perfect. *visual*

So if you wanted it to fade to a white background, you just put a layer fillied with white below the faded layer, you can fade into whatever you want :)

I think you can use the mask tool as well with the black ---> white gradient.

1) make two layers. base layer being white, top layer being the photo or whatever.
2) select the foreground to transparent gradient.
3) make the top layer active
4) press q to quick mask
5) using the gradient tool, drag down half way down from the pic. till you see a red colour fading into white.
6) press q again to get rid of the quick mask and go into standard mode. you will see a selection.
7) press delete and you will see your pic fade into the bg colour if you did it right.
