it's because youve been advertising your site's new layout on both kawaiiville and here and not providing a screen shot so people would click and visit your site to see your layout.

FYI, your site just froze my computer and stopped everything. It took me to another page, abrupted my 14 page essay and gave me a trojan virus. You might want to rethink your ads as if what happened to me happens to more people your hits won't increase anymore.

Yeah your site freezes for me and redirects to another website. But, I go back to it and each page has a pop up, it's really annoying, but congrats on the hits! :shifty:

I'm pretty sure they're hits, if she's using awstats which it looks like it, they're hits...

Her page has a virus/trojan? Fersure? I was redirected to another page so I didn't really see it at all. :P Congrats on your hits increase, mine have too but i think my happy streak is over and it's back to work time. :D Don't quit, but also don't give your users viruses. ;)

I have to jump in on the "hits" thing. You probably all understand, but some things bug me when they are left unclear.

I'll be lazy and use Wikipedia

The number of hits received by a website is frequently cited to assert its popularity, but this number is extremely misleading and dramatically over-estimates popularity. A single web-page typically consists of multiple (often dozens) of discrete files, each of which is counted as a hit as the page is downloaded, so the number of hits is really an arbitrary number more reflective of the complexity of individual pages on the website than the website's actual popularity. The total number of visitors or page views provides a more realistic and accurate assessment of popularity.

So I could boost my hits immediately by increasing the number of images on each page, but that wouldn't necessarily be an increase in traffic.

That still means more page impressions, more ad impressions, more chances to click ads. So it doesn't really matter :P

I see your point. If hits are going up it probably is a good thing. Or it could mean the pages have just gotten more complex. Or the more complex pages are being visited.

Andrew2

True dat. But generally it's a good thing... If the pages get more complex usually there's a decrease in UV I would assume, then there will be a fall in site hits shortly after.

On a resource site, a single overzealous user (or spider) can generate hundreds of hits just by themselves. Check your uniques and see how those are doing.

If you are interested in growth, remove all the ads until you get a good number of users.

strains for ridiculous example...
uh...

If I put a thousand different 1x1 clear pixels on each pages my visitors won't notice. So, I'm thinkin ol' Kelly has a clear pixel pixie. She got a pixel jones goin' on man.

Oh... Hits are like... everything? I don't know what we're talking about then :(
I remember hearing about those hits, now I see what you're talking about.

Jazzylee77

yep every little file load. if you visit a page that has 10 images, that is one hit for that page and 10 for the images. 11 hits.

A "hit" is anything on your page that loads; be it images, scripts, etc. Say I have 1 page with 20 images and 2 scripts, those images and scripts would = 22 hits even though 1 page has been viewed. Unique visitors is a more accurate way to gauge traffic.

Congrats Kelli, that's great :)

Google Analytics works best for me to track unique hits, rather than cpanel stats if you wanted to try something new :)

I can't believe there are ad networks that redirect your site to the one advertised though.. they're stealing all your traffic :S

Jazzylee77

It's understandably confusing. Most of us pick up our web facts from assumptions and what we hear from others. And it's pretty common to use the term "hits" incorrectly.

There are 4 basic common things that are measured.

Hits (total number of pages, images, files, etc. loaded )
page views
visitors
unique visitors (many programs like AWstats are bad at getting this number)

Almost everyone at first (me included) thinks hits means pageviews. But it doesn't. And in general it is not a very useful statistic to throw around.

then there are return stats and stickiness...

ok so how do i figure out my unique hits then?

You can use extreme tracker.

Unique hits isn't a commonly used metric. I honestly think the word hits is used more (even when incorrect) because it sounds cooler than visitor. Hit's is pageloads plus scripts initiated plus images and files loaded. If you really want to know how many unique times all that stuff was loaded I guess you could analyze your log files somehow, but the most commonly useful stat is unique visitors. And this stat is best collected by programs that exclude spiders and the url you access the site with during development.

visitors: sessions is another way to think of it. Different tracker will give different results usually because of the session time setting. If your session according to the tracker expires while you were on the phone or grabbing a cup of coffee, then you open another page on the site, you count as another visitor.

Unique visitors: Unique visitors are seen as distinct IP addresses or refer to a unique cookie set by the tracker and counted only once within the timeframe of the report no matter how many times they visit the site. Sometimes this term is compared to the term reach, which measures a market or messages audience in other media.

A subset of unique visitors would include new visitors, repeat visitors, and return visitors.

Page View: When a page has been viewed by one visitor. Another broad stat used to gauge popularity

Hit: When any item is retrieved from a server, whether it be a page, an image, or other files and scripts.

In addition to the above counts you can get other details from a tracker.

Visit Characterization:

Entry Page
Landing Page
Exit Page
Visit Duration
Referrer

Internal Referrer
External Referrer
Search Referrer
Visit Referrer
Original Referrer

Click-through
Click-through Rate
Page Views per Visit

once you have different kinds of count data as above, then you can start doing ratios to characterize your traffic. If you want to go really deep into some analytics definitions here is a pdf from the Web Analytics Association (http://www.webanalyticsassociation.org/attachments/committees/5/WAA-Standards-Analytics-Definitions-Volume-I-20070816.pdf)

But yeah, extreme tracker is good, statcounter and others
