Thanks Elvis but I would appreciate it if people would write in a bit more detail. E.g good content -what would you consider good content?, etc..

- not too many ads. i hate it when i go to a site and my browser is hit with 3 popups. I immediately leave and don't return. it just makes the site such a pain to visit.

- really bad navigation. if i have to go throught 6 million links to get to one damn graphic, i leave, or if the navigation is unclear and i have no idea what's going on. also i hate broken links. if it doens't work - fix it!

- crap layouts. i don't leave if the site's layout is terrible but i don't stay on it as long. sometimes i browse pages just for the layout.

- bad colour combos. why would anyone want to visit with blinding lime green in their face?

- content. high quality stuff is essential. i don't want to use a graphics that's pixelated or has bad colour issues. or if the tag is covering half the graphic i ain't gonna use it. i want my myspace to have an about me sign but not when it says: "HTTP://WWW.VISITMYSITEORDIE.COM" slap bang in the middle.

- regular updates. i hate dead sites and i don't visit often if the last update was 6 months ago.

my 2 cents.

^ I agree.. don't add pop-ups.. you can probably get away with it if your site is huge but when you're starting out you really shouldn't add any popups because it will stop visitors from returning to your website..

Other than that, make your site stand out.. I know I hate surfing myspace resource sites that all look exactly the same.. if your site stands out, offers unique content and is updated regularly users are probably going to visit it again :)

two important things, 1) promotion and 2) regular, systematic updates.

leave comments, send bulletins... get a big friend's list. This stuff is useful in the beginning if you are starting from scratch.

you should update regularily at around the same time, so users get used to the frequency of activity on your site. Don't hide your updates, let people know what you have updated... put little new buttons on your side bars, and show samples on your index page of any new update.

The most important step a webmaster should do is to identify what people are looking for and to identify how much demand and supply there is. This step is crucial and often not even done by beginners.

Ways to identify what people are looking for and how much demand there is:

1) Browse myspace profiles and see what people are using
2) Use keyword research tools
http://www.keyworddiscovery.com/search.html
http://freekeywords.wordtracker.com/
3) Examine your server logs to see what search terms people used as well as what pages on your sites get visited often
4) Examine the Extreme Tracking stats of successful sites and see what keywords are being searched

How to determine how much supply there is:
Google the keywords and see how many results show up
