Lyzrdgyzard- He is an active member who helpful, nice but would have the ability to be a fair mod.
Geg2- Another active member who goes out of his way to help. He's mature and seems to have a lot of knowledge.

Joking aside. It has everything to do with it. Connections point is very valid. Need someone who at least knows what they're doing, like Chris. Anyone who has ANY affiliation with glitters or rubbish freebies is out.

You don't know anything about them. People don't just roll up and take charge of things. It shouldn't even be a vote, Greg should just pick someone quietly.

do you know any thing about running a forum? I don't but I have helped running a friends car forum which is larger then this forum and I know how things are ran.
It's the worst thing possible to make a new member a mod,
It's like putting some one who is off the street into be a presidential candidate,
sure anne may be a good member, but in terms of how long shes been on this site she has only been her 3-4 months? She needs to mature as a member around here.
If I was running a forum I would never make a new member a mod.

man this forum has changed a lot people have seen a lot of things,
new member have missed a lot of the "development" of this forum, a few people have been around since this forum first opened.
I have never seen a large forum where people are a member for 3-4 months and then made a mod it would just be a joke.
It would be like making that Jeremy guy who scammed every one on here a mod.

I run a forum so I do know a lot about which people to make mods and registration date has nothing to do with it.
You need to choose people that current members like and get along with, a member who also knows how to enforce rules on people they like and somebody the administrator can get along with as well or it will turn into a complete mess.
Older members shouldn't automatically become moderators.. its all about respect and definitely not about join date..

DavidR

No-one said they want a mod who bosses people around. That isn't the point of a mod.
And also, I said rubbish freebies, Andrews for example don't fall into the category of rubbish. Some of the tat that gets posted is embarrassing, we don't want people who want to give crap away just to get rep, we want someone who we respect who has knowledge in this niche and others, who has drive.
Connections is right it's changed lots. This forum was at it's prime over a year ago. Since then it has nose dived. It isn't as simple as "they joined first make them a mod" the fact you think that shows how silly you're being. It's about knowing the forum and it's real potential, knowing the members, what things were like when it was running well. That's why someone you just "like" can't simply be made a mod.
No offence to Anne who you guys nominated by the way, I'm not saying rubbish freebie and glitters are associated with her, they were general points. I don't even know who she is... which is why it needs to be someone with presence.
Nora
January 24th, 2008, 04:23 AM
You're talking about mods like they're supposed to be running this forum and building it like its their own website.. if that's what Greg expects mods to do then fine, maybe people with more business experience and MSP knowledge should become mods.
What I understand under the term moderator is somebody who is willing to volunteer to make this forum a better place and keep things under control.. why should the potential of the forum and its history matter? They're only here to keep things clean and help out.. its not like they will run a business all of a sudden and get special privileges right?
I just hope Greg picks somebody we all respect.. isn't that why we're supposed to vote?
DavidR
January 24th, 2008, 04:27 AM
Mods show an example of the sort of members here and that's not just smiles and friendliness... I don't know what Greg expects, if he wants a respected community like he once had he can go one way - if he wants to make a few bucks for people posting market place topics he can go the other.

Yeah but that's up to Greg and not mods.. I doubt he'd change his business plan because moderators want to see the forum managed differently :S

Anne
January 24th, 2008, 04:35 AM
Hi David, nice to meet you.
I think a mod should be someone who has these qualities:
1. Is friendly, respectful, and fair.
2. Knows the rules of the forum/subforum that he or she is the moderator of, and abides by them.
3. Can enforce said rules to the best of his or her ability, while remaining fair to all members of the community.
That being said, I'd like to nominate Felicity (Jazzy-Jazz) as a moderator, it appears she has all of the above named qualities and more, and I think she would be a good choice.

Greg has said many times in topics he wants to bring the forum up to scratch again.
Join date again? It's like talking to a brick wall... I explained that already... it isn't because they joined first. It's the experience and knowledge of the forum they have and the fact the community knows them. Someone who joined 1 year ago, but hasn't posted doesn't qualify for that, so it isn't about join date. It's experience and knowledge.
If it was simply for someone to clean up a few posts, then Greg was wasting our time in posting this topic and posing this question, because anyone can do that. That doesn't need a vote. Sitepoint has mods, team leaders and mentors, the combination of those is important.

This topic was a debate waiting to happen :)
I think the useless posts just posting random things should stay out of this thread.
I do have to agree with all the other members that say it should be somebody that has been here with experience. It's not the join date that matters. Some people who joined when the forum first opened, don't have the experience because they just pop in and out and don't participate.
However, somebody like Chris, or Jamie...etc, would be examples of people that do have experience because they have been here a while and know this forum in and out. Somebody who has been here a few months, all great qualities in mind, may not "get it" to the extent that the other senior members do.
I do know ultimately it's Greg's decision. Having users chime in would be helpful, as it was actually mentioned a while ago as a suggestion to let the members pick, however....I don't think the majority vote should be the ultimate decision. I think Greg should take all nominees into consideration and pick the best person for the forum.
As this is a mod nomination thread, I will keep other opinions about the forums current status to myself for another time :)
These are my opinions. Happy voting.
BTW, Just to clear up a few pm's, I'm not a full mod. I just watch over the marketplace. I have absolutely NO power at all in other forums, nor do I have options to edit/delete/mod anything BUT the marketplace.
And I think a great candidate in another timezone should be considered. It would certainly help.

Jessica/Jessidel ~ Amicable as well, and she is very well liked and respected here.

If she's good enough to mod the marketplace, she should be good enough to mod the whole forum.
I know there are a few that have issues with her, but can they honestly step up and say that she has done anything unfairly as a mod in the marketplace?

I nominate myself because I always see duplicate threads and other things that get on my nerves. Unlike past mods, I wouldn't just lock it (adsense threads, remember?), I would probably merge the threads and promote the search feature. I have a lot of experience modding since I own my own forum currently with 36x,xxx posts. All of the members are teens and we don't have the drama this forum has. Coincidence? No, I'm simply that awesome.
The only thing about me is that I kinda have a life now(2 schools, 1 certificate program, and a band). I probably wouldn't get to read everything.

Actually yeah Sergio gets my vote. Chris was my neutral all round choice, but Sergio get's my actual vote, just for saying what he said there... cause duplicate topics and people not using the search feature... or common sense/Google is really frustrating. No previous mods have done anything like this and it needs to be done.

Not "Anne".
And double posting is frowned upon in almost every other forum I've visited.... ever. Thats why there shouldn't be a timed edit button for our posts.

There are also ways to automatically merge posts, if it can happen on phpbb it can happen on vbulletin

I say Chris, David and Misterproline. I think we actully need two new mods.

I'm torn now Chris is very helpful and has knowledge in and out this niche and as I mentioned respected as a user/seller. Think Sergio still needs to be a mod, but we need two for sure, especially with two good candidates.
You were looking for one, but if two perfect willing candidates appear... why not two!

I nominate me.
And remember kids. A vote for George is a vote for change!
LOL this guy even has his own slogan! I don't know who he is, but I'll vote for him. :punk:

His slogan ought to be "Vote for George or get George-Slapped" ;)

I'd nominate Chris. I feel he's mature and would be fair around here.

Just for the record, you can nominate people you think I can't stand as well. Anyone is fair game.
Hahah, in that case I nominate Fryman.

We're going to need more than one, but choosing the first new mod couldn't have been easier. I've contacted Chris (nsmchris) and he's said he would be happy to be a moderator on MSP. I'll make things official on Monday.

PGZ's name has been bold blue ever since the cprv episode. Is PGZ officially reinstated as a mod? By the way, I'd love to have him back as a mod.

He's always had some residual mod powers but after that cprv incident I made him a full mod for emergencies. He is not a mod though, no.

Indeed. I've been caught in one hell of a snow storm so I haven't been able to work at all. It's been one thing after another out here and it's finally returning to normal so I'll be able to get the things that need getting to.
