do some research and try yourself. If they could actually get you to #1 for a hot term, they would do it for their own site instead.

nice, what do you mean "do it for their own site" ?

Agreed, you should educate yourself on the subject of SEO. SEO knowledge is freely available on the Internet.
Also, if some SEO firm tells you they can guarantee top 10 rankings, they are either lying or talking about less competitive keyword phrases or less competitive search engines.

if your domain is fairly new (under 9 months) you probably wont be able to rank for some of the big terms like "myspace layouts" anyways. secondary keywords like "cute myspace layouts" you will be able to rank for and are easy enough that anyone can do it on their own.
if you search for the term "SEO Company" or other related terms if a company is promising first page rankings but can't do it for their own site then look elseware

It's worth paying someone if there is enough traffic for a given term that you'll make your spend back through onsite ads etc. Getting #1 for a term isn't a given though be sure you know what type of competition is out there...

Usually they say "Page #1 guaranteed or your money back!"
What they don't say they'll get you ranked on page #1 for a keyword like "myspace layouts you never wanted and never will"

Don't.. its a total waste of money.
Just put your money into building a good relevant website.

Even the most relevant website doesn't make it without basic SEO
Put your TIME into learning the basics

Exactly. Alot of people build sites, fill it will tons of relevant unique stuff and then 6 months down the road still don't rank for anything other then their sites name and can't figure out what they're dong wrong and when people with even basic SEO knowledge look at their site and incoming links can immediately see mistakes left and right. It takes less then a day to learn the basics which can save you alot of trouble in the long run.

Don't pay for seo. Most people that offer seo services, want to tie you down, and charge you monthly for "maintenance." The really honest services are going to be outside your budget, and the dirt cheap ones are scams, and may even screw up your site by using shady techniques. It's good to pay for stuff like directory submissions (not that they are worth much anymore) and stuff, since they take forever to do yourself. Since this is a myspace site. Just work on content and forget about obsessing over seo. You would have better luck trying to recruit loyal users for your site, and they will advertise your site by using your content.

Sorry for replying to this 6-7 day old topic but, what would you suggest for learning the basics? I know someone posted a link before, but I want more.
I fit into that category, definitely. I have so many mistakes and it makes me so mad because... I feel like I'm wasting my time. I'm trying to find good keywords but I suck at it. For starters, half of my stuff doesn't even link back to me (because I hate link backs so I thought well, they (visitors) don't like them either so why should I do that). Now I regret it. At first I was just doing the whole, "oh it's for fun, not to make a couple bucks" but now I want to. It's almost impossible for me... I wish someone here could help me, please. If I could show you my AdSense thing, you'd probably die... I don't understand CTR or eCPM... no idea about either one, and apparently, you'd die laughing looking at mine. And... this has nothing to do with keywords so whatever. Well, maybe it does? I don't know :(
:shifty:
All I rank for (that I know of) is my sites name and 2 other completely stupid keywords that nobody searches for. I don't know where my unique hits come from, they're probably all me. I suck. Seriously. To my knowledge, my graphics don't... so I need help. My site deserves to be ranking for some good terms, so why can't it? Well, because of me!

The benefits of hiring a SEO to do the work for you, is that you would then be able to concentrate on your websites content, updating and building it up. SEO is very time consuming, if you want to do well with it.

Don't pay anyone, at least for beging, you can do much things only by yourself. Starting with link exchanges, submitting to directory listings, posting blogs, join social bookmarking websites. All those strategies will bring you better chances to be ranked better.
Problem with hiring SEO expert, is because it is hard to find good SEO expert with real experiancy. May people claim they are SEO experts, but they aren't. And you will pay them, and expect results in 3-6 months.
So, my advice do not hire them, until you can afford real SEO expert!

its not that hard to do. You need a lot of links, and time and it helps to have an aged domain.
Is it worth spending money rank for ultra competitive terms or spreading your SEO efforts for many less competitive terms?
