What happens for my site...is that, if I add LOTS of content one week, then I will get a ton of visitors, but if I don't add any content for a few days, all the hits drop.
Is there a way to maintain the hits I get? And it's not a lot at all. :s It's around 50-100.
They've dropped ever since I went on a site hiatus. :(
I've been studying a lot for my exams last year - came out with good results...Gotta do the same this year...So it obviously means neglection of my site for several months. I do ocassionally add several updates when I can, but I'm not a human machine to add 100000 graphics a day!!
Before my site wasn't on a hiatus, I would be getting 150-350 hits a day.

I never go on hiatus. Once I see a site go on hiatus, I stop going. My best advice is to space out your content. If you design 60 graphics over the course of a day or two, instead of posting them all on the same day, post maybe 7-15 a day throughout the week. Then people see that you're consistantly updating & will come back more often to see what they're missing.
Why exactly are you on hiatus & for how long? :)

You need to constantly update your site. Google LOVES updated sites. With so many sites around you updating, if you stop, you are toast.
I have had sites go from 35k uniques/day to 15k/uniques a day after only one month of not updating.

Have a random graphic/layout on your homepage. I'm not sure if that helps or fools search engines, but it's worth a try.

Did you stop building links as well?

Yeah, hun, that would be why. :( People give up on a site that doesn't update in a few weeks or months. You don't have to be a graphics factory, just update a few times a week. :)
Please PM me if you need any help or suggestions about anything! :)

The problem with my site I believe, is that it's not as busy as other myspace/graphic resource sites.
It's quite...plain to be honest. But that's how I want it. Plain and simple. As I find with busier myspace sites, my eyes hurt after 10 minutes of browsing...The links are hard to find. It's just the content in their middle pages which I look at...Then I go on their affiliates links - only to find their affie sites are just the same busy looking content. :s
And those are the sites which get most hits!! If I busy up my site, it would lose originality (not that it can ever be totally original but it's worth a try! ;)

Best advise. This is what I do.
Also don't worry so much about it. If you are determined and you enjoy what you do, you will be ok. It always takes hard work, but it will pay off.
Little by little flowers grow hehehe

I see what you're getting at. What's your site's url, so I can check it out? :)

My site URL is: http://toxicdiamonds.dolliholics.net
Also...Who are your target audience for those who own a site? How do you know your target audience?
And are there actually people without sites who USE your content? o__0 That's what I'm always wondering...How can you get more people to use your content so that your content doesn't go to waste?

adding graphics isnt going to do any thing,
you need to add content IE WORDS.
then new pages,
then fresh links ect ect
over and over
adding graphics is only one piece to a much bigger puzzle.

Can you explain what you mean about adding ''words''?

Have unique title tags and meta tags for each page.

Same with me, or I go after a while. I'd just suggest advertising it more, buying advertising would make a big difference too, and you'd get plenty more hits, some sites dont charge much, have a look around?

^ I found that advertising didn't bring me that many hits...or as many that I expected. Perhaps I was advertising on the wrong sites. I found that using SEO really helps. And of course, updating. I've updated everyday from 1st December and my hits have *slowly* increased.

All you do is add stuff like
This site has:
myspace graphics
myspace layouts
and then your site will rank for those terms.

I just want to check, since you use the word "hits". You know thats not visitors? You can cause 50-100 hits just messing around adding a little content.
From http://www.marketingterms.com
Hit
Definition
Request of a file from a Web server.
Information
The term "hit" is perhaps the most misused term in online marketing, mistakenly used to mean unique visitors, visits, page views, or all of the above.
A hit is merely a request for a file from a Web server. A request for a Web page counts as a hit, but so does a request for a graphic on a Web page. Since the number of graphics per page can vary considerably, hits mean very little for comparison purposes.
Don't use the term "hit" unless you really mean it. ;-)

yup have to have the text on the page. its possible for a site to rank without your targeted keywords on the page or title tag but why make it harder then you have to

The issues is that you are competing with others sites, so if your content becomes stagnant, users will find a better site.

Ok. I'm a student. I don't have much time on my hands but I really don't want to shut down my site, Toxic Diamonds.
My site is also on a sub domain which I think is also the problem...as the URL is long and unless you bookmark my site or click my site link from an affie, then users come onto my site.
If I buy a domain, it means I'm going to have to renew it every year or for however long it expires. I have the hosting sorted. My current hostess is willing to host me if I buy a domain.
I'm not sure if it's worth it though...It also means re-coding all the pages for me and because I don't make layouts with the ''typical'' myspace layout - navigation on the left. content in the middle and affiliates/links on the right, I do not know if I will STILL lose my visitors...
Any advice you can offer will be deeply appreciated.
Many thanks.

you can get cheap domains ;\ or use http://www.freedomain.co.nr/ or w/e, but its an iframe domain thing.
And hiatus.. For a few MONTHS? Why are you even askin why people stop visiting! lol, your people were obviously FANS! If they see a hiatus they're gonna just stop GOING. Its okay to go on hiatus for a week or somethin but geez.
