Most common edits are cropping, resizing, and change of file type. Myspace pictures (my pics) in your profile are limited to 600k, (.gif or jpg). Irfanview is a nice free program to make these and other basic edits.

In fact Irfanview (http://www.download.com/IrfanView/3000-2192_4-10311994.html?tag=lst-0-1)is even mentioned in the Myspace FAQs for image problems...

First, make sure the image you are attempting to upload is in one of the formats MySpace accepts (.gif, .jpg). Next, make sure the filename is simple and short, with no spaces or funny characters. "Image.jpg" is a good filnename "Me at the beach! drinking some Coors~~.jpg" is probably not going to work. Next, make sure the filename is less than 600k. We do not allow images over 600k. If none of these things work, it's possible that the image is corrupted.

Luckily there is an easy solution. Go to http://www.download.com/ and download a copy of the software program IrfanView. IT'S FREE and you can use it to resize images so they're less than 600k, or resave images that may be corrupted. Once you have downloaded and installed IrfanView, simply run the program, open your .gif, or .jpg image, and resave it as another version (example: in IrfanView, open file named pic01.jpg, and resave it as pic01b.jpg). Then, simply return to MySpace and upload your newly resaved image.

pictures for comments, messages, backgrounds and other areas can be of larger size, but it's often best to optimize them to smaller file sizes and workable dimensions so they don't slow page loads or break layouts.

If you have particular problems with a pic, many can help further here.

If all you want to do is make your photos look better before you post them to MySpace, then I highly recommend Picasa from Google (http://picasa.google.com/). It's free, it's easy, and it's awesome. From there, you can crop, resize, tweak, fix redeye, sepia, share, and ORGANIZE.

If you want to create graphics yourself, then you'll definitely need a good graphics editor. I would recommend Photoshop (expensive) or Paint Shop Pro or something along those lines.

I use:
Resizing : JPEG Resizer It's free and very good and does batches

http://www.virtualzone.de/resizer/

File renaming : RenameFiles Also free and excellent.Batch also.

http://it-falke.com/software/renamefiles/us_download.php

Thumbnails : Easy Thumbnails .Also free and very very easy.

Also Paint shop pro 7 and animation shop.....neither of which I am very good at.

Those free progs are a great set of tools though.

I always resize normal pics to 300 max width because they fit nicely on my site.

Most people that don't want to spend money on expensive graphics software will use Irfan View (http://www.irfanview.com/). It's been around for several years and gets good reviews.
