Locally, theres a best buy and a Staples, I know that profesionally I would go to Staples because theyre cheaper and they don't scam people but I dont know if they install RAM or anything like BestBuy might do.
Anyone know how much 1gb of ram might cost?
How long would it take to install it? I can't install it, I know nothing about computer hardware.
I want to get this done today but Ive never done anything like it and there's not very many computer places near me.

I JUST TOLD YOU! It takes like 30 seconds to clip it in. And the cost depends on the type of ram you need, nooooooooooooooooooooob

I don't know where you live but, 1gb of RAM can cost anything from £5-£50 depending on where you look and what kind/brand you purchase. My boyfriend bought some of mine off ebay, the rest came out of my old AMD athlon pc.
my computer has about 2gb of DDR2 RAM.
installing ram is the easiest job ever, even a trained monkey could do it. all it requires is taking the cover off your tower, looking for the other sticks of RAM, slotting the new stick into one f the free slots, clip it in and then put the cover back on your tower and switch your pc off. something that takes less than 30 seconds.

I dont know how much £5-£50 is in US $... I guess I'm just a monkey cus that sounds complicated :) Knowing me, I'd get too interested in taking it apart or I'd lose a screw or something.
And 70-100? I thought it was around 50ish-100sh. It's expensive :-/
Best buy would do it though, for sure? Anyone know if Staples performs it?

yeah RAM is pricey, but its worth it, my aunts mac was kicked up to 1gb and ran like it was brand new. its definately a worthy investment =]

Does STAPLES DO IT?

PUT IT IN YOURSELF. Get corsair, or crucial or kingston. Download tuneup utilities or somethin and itll tell you the brand of your motherboard, so we can look up the type of RAM it takes. Oh yeah, youre on a laptop right? RAM install will void warranty you know.
geg2
November 27th, 2007, 05:41 AM
1) Make sure you know what type of RAM is compatible with your PC.
2) Open the PC case by loosening the screws.
3) To remove old RAM, put your thumbs on the off-white tabs holding the RAM and push both downwards and away from the memory stick.
4) To install the new RAM stick, note that the memory stick will go in only one way. Visually compare the RAM stick with the memory slot to figure out which way it goes. Then insert the memory stick into the slot until the off-white tabs click onto the memory stick.
5) Run the BIOS program when prompted and save the new configuration.
Sometimes, you can use the old memory sticks together with the new memory sticks, depending on
1) number of slots available
2) whether the old memory sticks are compatible with the new memory sticks
//edit: You're using a laptop? Oops, the above instructions are for a PC. But you didn't specify what you had. I've worked in tech support and that's the first question I would ask. " What type of computer do you have? "
Andrew2
November 27th, 2007, 05:46 AM
oh. yeah it's a laptop, hp pavillion dv 5000. AMD turion processor, 384mb ram,

Go to Chapter 8 of this manual and you will see the illustrated instructions for replacing your RAM.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c00630975.pdf
Here are a few things you should know:
1) Laptop parts typically cost much more than PC parts, including RAM
2) Make sure the RAM you're buying is compatible with your laptop; crucial.com is a pretty good site for this; you'll need to know the exact model number of your laptop, which is either on the top or bottom of your laptop
3) If you ever need to call HP tech support with problems, they will ask you to remove all non-HP brand parts, including RAM; so keep your original HP memory stick; you can also buy HP-branded RAM but that is usually expensive
4) the memory stick is held by two metal clips; just use your fingernails and bend the flexible metal clips away from the stick
Jen

Installing RAM into a lappy is much harder then a normal PC. I would have someone do it if your not familiar with installing and yes it does void warranty
Andrew2
November 27th, 2007, 06:18 AM
My computers like, 3years + old, I don't even have the warranty because I think it expired a couple years back ;o
Im scanning with crucial and it says "DDR PC2700" for each slot. :) Thanks geg2!
So now I think I can walk into like..staples or best buy and just ask for 1gb ram for my laptop with that ram information right? I don't want to look like an idiot and forget information or walk in with my entire laptop.
geg2
November 27th, 2007, 06:18 AM
The typical warranty of an HP laptop is one year. So if the laptop is beyond one year, there is no warranty on it anyway.
Andrew2
November 27th, 2007, 06:21 AM
Do i have all the information i need to buy the right ram stick for my laptop?
geg2
November 27th, 2007, 06:23 AM
Get the exact model number off the laptop and try crucial.com ;
the site will also give you an idea of price
Andrew2
November 27th, 2007, 06:26 AM
well like I said, I got my information already and the ram number. Crucial told me 169.99 for 2 sticks with 2gb each..which yeah, I only want 1 stick of 1gb :s
If I was to go in there today and tell them my laptop number, all the specs and give them my ram number (that i got from crucial.com) - DDR PC2700
That's All i would need right?
omen
November 27th, 2007, 06:28 AM
Take your laptop in there and go "Hey buddy, I need some more RAM can you beam me up scotty?"
He'll undo a little square cover on the bottom, slide it in and you'll go oooh baby!
Cost you around 80 bucks for a 1GB, perhaps less seeing PC2700 is fairly old now.
In fact, they mighten even have that and will need to put in PC3200 or something (It will just run at PC2700)
Andrew2
November 27th, 2007, 06:29 AM
Yeah but I don't have 30 bucks to pay for installation nor do I want to look like an idiot and walk in with my laptop.
omen
November 27th, 2007, 06:35 AM
They charge for install? They shouldn't... It's like a 30 second process.
If not, you can do it yourself and its fairly safe. Just do it on the kitchen sink and ground yourself on the tap to get rid of any static charge..
If you go out and get it, by the time you get back I'll have some links to video tutorials
I used to "design" on 256mb of ram and it'd piss me off to no end, then I got 1gb in my laptop and it's been unreal after that I can do so much more. I can actually comfortably have more than 3 canvas's open! rofl

And yeah, alot of places will charge for installation which is why I plan on doing it myself I have heard that it's an easy process for desktops and a moderate process for laptops.

I just went on bestbuy.com and staples.com and all 1gb ddr sell for 150 bucks each :(
geg2
November 27th, 2007, 06:52 AM
On the HP Pavilion DVs, it's two screws on the bottom of the laptop, remove the cover, and bend two metal clips holding the RAM.
If you are going to do it yourself, instead of buying from Staples, you can order it from Crucial.com. The guys at Best Buy and Staples don't always know what they're talking about when it comes to older HP laptops. They may have been hired just a few months ago. Crucial.com only sells RAM. And no, I've never worked for Crucial nor been an affiliate for them.

1GB Crucial Stick for $69.99, $53.99 after mail in rebate. Free Shipping. Newegg is very reputable, and is your best place to buy computer hardware. I've dealt with them many times when building computers. All products came in on time or earlier, and packaging was impeccable.

On the HP laptops, if you change the amount of RAM, you'll get a message about a change in RAM and be prompted to save the new configuration. Choose the option to save the new configuration.
You can also hit F10 during boot-up and run the bios program, and then save the configuration.
Andrew2
November 27th, 2007, 07:47 AM
You really did used to work for tech support. :)
I was gonna turn my computer off to do it, and unplug it..So I don't die or something but if I don't have to turn it off or anything and just save config, that sounds good to me.
I think I'm gonna buy online now, from either crucial or newegg :)

Turn off the laptop.
Unplug the power cord.
Touch a metal object that is connected to the ground. A faucet, a door knob. Don't get your hands wet.
Do not walk across carpet with rubber soles after this. This avoids creating static.

GOD THIS IS SO FLIPPING FRUSTERATING.
I took off the compartments on the back and one section is a giant metal block, the other section is a broadcom wifichip and the other half of the compartment with the wifichip is blocked off with this metal wall and theres 2 screws that wont come out.
I can't find any tutorials on taking apart a pavillion dv5000 :(
All the videos about installing ram are SOO EASY
I took out the wifi chip the first time, but put it back before i took it out cus there's 2 metal wires welded to it...
There's this compartment right behind my battery that has this metal block in it, it's really weird looking and it has 2 copper colored screws, They WONT come out so i dont know what's in them... The other half of that compartment is the wifi chip...And only other compartment has this huge metal thing like, its a giant piece of metal hardware crap.
if you google "taking apart dv5000" you don't get any tutorials on taking apart this stupid laptop.

did you take the memory stick and dip it in a glass of water right before putting it into your computer? This is highly recommended according to a manual that my computer geek friend wrote while he was drunk and high off crack.

dude!!! dont pay nobody to install it, its easy. just like Kasami2k4 said, all you have to do is open your computer up and clip it in 2 little clamps.
If you do have the option.. get some heatsink ram. It may be a little more [not much though] but it will last a whole lot longer.
Is there a Frys (http://shop1.outpost.com/ac/storelocator/index.jsp;jsessionid=P8BuvTLnsY41lrLYzgNFUg**.node 1) near you? Thats where i get all my computer parts. Good luck!
