heh... I make my graphics on PS then I transfer them to PSP to make animations. Mostly because animationshop has some features that work together with PSP.

I do all my work on imageready. In my opinion Photo Shop is the better program to use to make glitters.

I'm using Photoshop CS2 v 9 and over the past year I've slowly come to understand how the essential features work. I've benefited so much from the designers here, maybe some of my experience now can help a beginner get started.
The relationship between Image Ready and Photoshop is important to wrap your head around when doing glitters in PS (Photoshop).
If you open a glitter fill gif in PS, huh... just a single frame is imported...no glittery!
However if you open that gif in ImageReady, Ouila! There are all the frames and you can see the layers selected as you check each frame of the animation toolbar.
Moving the fill frames to PhotoShop
In the default view there is a toolbar on the left. At the bottom of that toolbar are a couple icons with an arrow pointing to the PS feather icon. Guess what? That sends all those frames and layers to PS . Once the fill is in PS you can save the individual layers as patterns. Select the first animation frame,

click edit, "define pattern". Repeat for the other frames.
It would be a good idea to get familiar with organizing your patterns. I find it useful to have groups of fill patterns saved organized like...3frame glitter fills...3frame transparent fills... 4frame fills etc.
Organizing Fill Patterns in PhotoShop
Click Edit - Preset Manager - then select patterns from the dropdown.
Here is something I learned the hard way. If you are clicking around the patterns and one or more of the patterns is highlighted, then the option is available to "save set." I took this to mean it would save the entire set of patterns shown. But no it only saves the ones you have selected as a set. I lost several months of accumulated patterns with this assumption.
You may want to play around with saving and loading for a while to make sure you understand how this works. you can load sets and they are added to the pattern preset manager, you can individually delete patterns, move patterns around in the grid, or save selected groups of patterns. Having a well organized collection of fills is time well spent.
I have my grid set to 6 blocks wide in the pattern preset manager(I forget where this is done) This is useful since most glitter fills are in sets of 3 and it makes it easy to spot the groups. Then with the 4 frame fills I put in a couple dummy frames to the right so it stays organized.

Once you have your fills there are many ways to proceed. A typical process for me goes like this.
Start with clipart or image or empty blank image. Use the Text tool (anti-alias set to smooth) resize and style the text. Select the layer text and play with the layer styles. (second icon from the left on the bottom of the layer toolbar) Right click the layer and rasterize. (turns the text into an image so you can mess with it) right click and Duplicate the text layer for use in 3 or 4 frames.
The click Edit - Fill (or SHIFT F5)
From the custom pattern dropdown Select the first fill of the glitter pattern you want to use. There are a few options in the fill window. In my version if you select a pattern I then have to click an empty area of the window tho make the selection screen out of the way to alter other options. For clear fills, generally 100% opacity, preserve transparency ticked, and normal mode works. Sometimes fills with a black background can work in screen mode essentially like a clear fill. Also playing with the opacity can make the effect more subtle, or if it is a colored fill you can retain some of the original text or images appearance, blending colors or whatever.
Select the next Layer and fill with the next pattern of the glitter
On the animation tool bar, usually sitting bottom left, change the frame time to .10 second. duplicate the frame. Select the first frame - select the layers you want to see in that first frame. select the second frame etc.
There are other basic types of glitters, like:
in a layer style use a pattern fill for "stroke" to animate an outline,
select parts of an image, duplicate the image and fill,
use filters like "add noise" and change the filter settings for different layers
or combinations these methods and others
At the bottom of the left tool bar in PhotoShop there is an icon that will send your work to ImageReady. To save or import animated frames you must go to ImageReady.
Saving the Gif in ImageReady
You can go File - "save optimized as" or CONTROL+ALT+SHIFT+S
That awkward looking keyboard shortcut will actually fit under your left hand pretty quickly..ring finger Ctrl, index Alt and give Shift the bird. then hit s with your right hand. One of those moves that comes automatically after a few dozen times.
